CALLUM McGREGOR looks set to become Celtic’s new captain.

New Hoops boss Ange Postecoglou wants to appoint Scott Brown’s successor from within and will hold talks with the Scotland midfielder in the coming days.

Christopher Jullien is also being considered, but it looks like McGregor will land the armband after impressing Postecoglou with his Euro 2020 performances.

The Aussie said: “I have only had limited experience of him, but I watched him live and I thought he had a tremendous tournament, irrespective of his goal against Croatia. I thought he grew into the tournament.

Even in the last game he was in the middle of everything. He really wanted to be involved and take a leadership role. He’s one I will sit down and chat to.

“He has a great history around the club and I think he will come back really motivated, really wanting to take this club up.

“He is definitely one of the people I will be looking to for leadership, irrespective of whether he is captain or not. I see him as a very influential figure, for sure.

With Scott Brown gone there is a vacuum.

“It’s about seeing now whether there is somebody within the club who wants to step up because it’s often difficult when you have such a powerful figure there.

“Other players maybe don’t feel comfortable expressing themselves, as much out of respect more than anything else

Now that person has gone I’m going to be looking within the club to see if there is a person there.

    Don't feed the troll boys.

A guy who idolises Rogic, who has floundered on the European stage bar the Man City home game, is telling us that McGregor - goals versus Ajax, Bayern Munich, Zenit - is only good enough for domestic football.

    * up, it should have been obvious watching Scotland against a technical team like Croatia the vast difference in decision making, technique, control, passing, composure and just overall standard of player, reality is most modern day Scottish players sink at the top level, they're not cut out for those levels consistently, that includes most of our Scottish players.

Hence why if we're to improve in Europe, signing players from Belgium, Italy, Croatia, France, Germany, Spain etc is a far better bet of getting us there who all go through far better technical systems of youth development.

He is probably our only option as next captain.
Julian is too much of a drama queen, too easily knocked out of his stride, goes down way too easy, often bullied and wont ever man up.
Apart from that, not really many options, Forrest seems to be totally not captain material.
Turnbull is the only other option but he is just in the door and would be a right kick in the nuts for CMcG.
So likely it will be him.
He did have a dreadful season, so hopefully clean slate and he will be back to his best now, we did see the CMcG of old for Scotland recently, so here's hoping going forward.

Dreadful season under a dreadful manager under dreadful circumstances. I think being captain proper can reviltialize him.

I’ve probably said it on every second page of this thread (maybe more) but we cannot lose him. He is our one and only untouchable player. Lose him and we are done for. He is our captain and our lynchpin.

Controversial but I think this man is goanny shine with the responsibility he's inheriting. The job is now his and his alone, different ball game to playing stand-in.

Highly intelligent footballer, already in coach mode to the youngsters and now has the freedom to be the all-round midfielder he is. POTY prediction before the season has even started.

He will show this season why everyone writing him off after a season where he was clearly being held back by the manager and tactics, was wrong.

I pray for the day we can produce players like him on the regular.

    My favourite player.

He has freedom in there, calling it now he’ll be POTY.

Some people on here have been screaming for half the squad to be sold just to soothe their anger over last season, including mcgregor, absolutely baffling to me how short people's memories are, like he hasn't been one of our most consistent players for years.

Folk say Forrest is taken for granted (and he is) but folk also don’t realise how monumental a player McGregor is. He’s broke the mould in terms of a Scottish youth player coming through at a Scottish club, he’s more technically gifted and composed on the ball than any other player we’ve produced as a nation for a number of generations.

Probably his own worst enemy in terms of playing every minute of every game and definitely a victim of a complete shitshow the past year.

Give him the captaincy publicly now or risk the wee murmurs about him fancying a crack at England becoming reality in this window. Literally unthinkable.
