Apologies if any of your ugly mugs are in any of these :101: Wish I'd lifted my camera now. Wasn't expecting that many folk, thought we we would get closer to the pitch.

BRENDAN Rodgers will assess the Celtic squad when they report back for pre-season training in June. The new Hoops boss will want to hit the ground running, with vital UEFA Champions League qualifiers coming up in the middle of July, and while, like every manager, he will want to strengthen the squad, he is also aware of the talent already available to him in the Celtic first-team.
“I’ve spoken at length with Peter and Dermot and they want to invest in the club,” the Celtic manager said. “Of course, they want to keep the club moving forward, but it’s also about the players who are here.
“Sometimes I think people look and want you to go and buy a £5million player or a £10million player, but your first look has to be within your own youth department. There are some wonderful young players here, so you might have a £5m-10m player actually in your own Academy. So my first look will always be to look there.
“We’ve got a good squad here and, of course, we want to improve on it, and we’ll look to do that over the coming years, and we’ll have a good look during pre-season and see how it develops.”
Even before Celtic begin the defence of the league title they’ve won for the past five seasons, they will have some vital European games coming up.
And having missed out on the group stages of the UEFA Champions League for the past couple of years, there is clear determination to get back to that stage again.
“I’m fortunate that I’m at a club where I’ve felt the support from the first conversation I had with Peter, and with Dermot,” said Brendan Rodgers, “so I know they will do everything they possibly can and give me every support.
“And that’s what drew me to here - I felt a real sense of togetherness with them, that they will offer me every opportunity to take the club forward because they want to take the club forward also.
"First and foremost we want to be competing in the Champions League and in order for that you have to qualify and get there, and certainly the objective then is, can you get out of the group stages and beyond.
“Of course, it’s difficult, but if you look at the likes of Porto and Benfica. Those are teams who are dominant in their own league, qualify for European football and then they go on and make a good fist of it.”

There is no doubt in my mind he will be backed in the transfer market and if we qualify for the champions league I would expect to see a marquee signing. As I said previously though our transfer model was working fine, buying from untapped markets. Now with a bigger budget we can aim a little bit higher whilst trying to find the gems from the untapped markets in europe as well.

Just had a proper look through Liverpool signings during his time there and by * did they sign some amount of over priced *.

You can almost pick out, without even knowing who he didn't want, the guys that a 'Transfer Committee' have came up with. You just have to hope he's given a greater reign over the signings here because the guys he did sign for Liverpool and play are all good players; Clyne, Milner, Allen, Coutinho, Sturridge. Then you have the vastly over-inflated dross like; Borini, Markovic, Ilori, Alberto, Balotelli etc...

We know for a fact he wanted Sanchez rather than Balotelli because he's told us so publically that he was over-ruled. You have to wonder about a large chunk of the rest of it; 32.5 million for Benteke? 15 million for Lovren? 25 million for Lallana? All 3 good players IMO but the fees involved are ridiculous.

I wouldnt get too carried away about those figures. Firstly and most importantly its good to remember that finances in the epl are beyond stupid.

Secondly, with the exception of Benteke, the rest where second string signings after liverpools's transfer committee refused more funds for better players.

Rodgers got to pick his targets, but he rarely got his first choices.

Also the Liverpools, Chelsea's, Man City's and Man u's of this world will ALWAYS pay inflated prices for opposition players. The nature of the beast.

That's what I'm getting at, the guys you knew were his first picks are all good players and all decent value over the peace; Allen, Milner, Clyne, Sturridge etc...

Which is why I hope (and believe) he'll have less restrictions placed above him in terms of player transfers.

Still, Liverpool must be kicking themselves at the volume of wasted money and time on most of those guys. Offset only really by the world class Suarez money.

Its really unfair to judge his signings going on what he did at Liverpool. Of all those players named how many did he say yes to. We will never know because the 'transfer committee' can over rule the manager. A fairer example of his dealings would be when at Swansea, that was a tight budget and he would probably get slightly more to spend here with Desmonds backing. Some of his signings were:

    Scott Sinclair- 1.5million
    Leon Britton- 400,000
    Fabio Borini- Loan
    Michel Vorm- 1.5million
    Gylfi Sigurdsson- Loan
    Steven Caulker- Loan
    Wayne Routledge- 1.75million

Most of these players were unknown at the time or young guys looking to make a name for themselves. Of course there were bad signings to including:

Danny Graham- 3.5million (although he got 12 goals in the league under Rodgers)
    Leroy Lita- 1.5million
    Luke Moore- 750,000
And a good few bosmans signed with the future in mind that didnt work out.

All in all though his transfer record is excellent when left to his own devices. Also the younger players who came through at Swansea and Liverpool bodes well for us. Guys like Tierney, McGregor, Henderson and others will improve so much under a man like Rodgers.

    A point I've reiterated.

Again, I think and hope he'll have less restrictions in that respect at us.
