Rodgers isn't fully absolved of blame. He spent £2.7 million on centre backs in January and we're no nearer to a stronger defence.

It must be remembered that, albeit under a different coach/manager, we still leaked goals at the back with Denayer and VVD as our cbs.

Whilst BR points the finger at lack if reinvestment, it has to be noted that ee have went through many different center backs now and we still have the same issues.

To add to that, Gordon still puts us under pressure with how he tries to play the ball out from the back. He tries to hit the full back at the side line with a man right on top of him. I cant see what there is to be gained from doing that away from home.

Whilst I like the idea of free flowing attacking football, its no use if we cant defend and more often that not, when we have come up against an opposition of a decent quality, this has been exposed.

Lennons defence was far more solid and organised.

Lennon had Fraser Forster in goals. I think people really underestimate how poor a keeper Craig Gordon is - he conceded 17 goals in the Europa League groups with Denayer and Van Dijk in front of him.

Gordon's faults go way beyond just kicking, and he certainly isn't the "good shot stopper" that he is always described as.

I agree with that, but the defence was a lot better organised also.

Matthews, Ambrose, Wilson, lustig. That defence didnt cost a lot of money. And out of them only really Lustig has sustained the best level. It shows the job that Lennon done with that group of players. I just simply have no confidence in BR away in europe.
People say Anderlecht, but if we are all being honest we got them at a good time.

The possession style tactic is notorious for its defensive flaws. Barca, City etc can be defensive with it obviously but I’m quite sure we’ll never be “solid” at the back playing this type of high pressing back line. There’s a reason not many lower standard team use it.

I want us to continue use it though as it suits us domestically extremely good.

With all this said, of course we can do better defensively then the * ups we continue doing now. And I would also like to see some form of “hybrid” between possession/defensive being worked on more.

We are in a tricky position where playing the same way in domestic and European competitions doesn't make sense. We have to have tactical flexibility.

Only thing to make up for the season now is the treble TREBLE and a decent run in europa for that to be achieved we don't have the depth of quality for all fronts , signings MUST come in.

Honeymoon's well and truly over Brendan....buckle up cause it's going to get rough from here I think...... both BR and the Board must accept that their failure to secure a solid defence over the last two years is quite simply a dereliction of their duty to scout out and attain players who can do the job without being breast fed and nurtured at a time when we need seasoned professionals......every successful manager would point out that, so long as a team don't concede goals, then they always have a chance at the other end....no matter who they are playing.....our defence has been piecemeal for a long time and it has to stop now or 10 is out of the question......no more excuses....spend the money that it takes to sort this sorry mess out. Hail, Hail

Haha yea I edited that in as you replied :56:

Lennon type did not work away from home to well, so I would love to see some type of possession/defensive hybrid lol. AEK actually impressed with the change from defence to offence and vice versa during the games.

and that's why he got us into Europe.

nothing to do with being jammy and getting through on technicality of teams fielding players they weren't supposed to.

I love Lennon, as a person he's a * hero of mine but it needs to be remembered some teams in qualifying he's taken a loss against as our manager.

football is a different beast then to what it is now, perhaps it's the increasing plough of money but it is evolving quicker than anytime I can remember.

That excuse is only relevant once we make it into the groups against the teams who are able to outspend us.

AEK, Astana, Beer Sheva, teams who we have suffered losses against, are not able to dramatically outspend us. Our defences have simply not been organised well enough and we have been tactically inept.
Even teams before then.. Malmo, maribor, Legia.. they dont outspend us either.

We have signed too many dead wood players. Look through our current squad and you have people in there earning 7.5K to 15K who should be nowhere near the club. We need quality NOT numbers. Very few of BRs signings started last night. 90% of them are no good

Most of them were against PSG though

Seriously though if we were getting pumped by 7 goals against PSG last year I'd hate to be versing them now

Half of the goals were against PSG, Barcelona and Bayern Munich I think? 52 conceded and I think exactly 26 were against Barcelona - 9?, Bayern - 5? and PSG - 12? The other 26 have been against about 13 different teams.

I know you could go further back but let's just go back to January with Morgan, Hendry and Compper coming in. Did Brendan himself not go on record as saying he was happy with that transfer window....i wasn't but it was 2 CB's coming in anyway. We didn't know then than Compper is a sicknote and Boyata is a snake.

I'd love to * know what was said between Pistol and Brendan and also what they told that snake Boyata before blame is thrown about.

I can't believe anyone's really that shocked with our board really given their record over the years with financial strategy....we could have Pep in for nothing and they still wouldn't deviate from it methinks.

I was hopeful this time but alas......i really thought because of our dominance and quality of manager they might just push the boat out that wee bit but same old same old!!

I hope not but if the guy walks i wouldn't blame him!!

Brendan has transformed the club since he has been here setting such high standards an entire season undefeated and 2 trebles , the first wee bit of failure and the knives are out from the media and some supporters analyzing and poring over everything from signings to tactics.

Won't be that when he cleans up domestically again.

Over the two legs AEK defended far better than us.
