The 'story' itself is weak but if you even read it as an essay, not paying particular attention, or at least not investing much of yourself into Winston and the story, then it is powerful. The themes are thought-provoking, intellectual and truly interesting. It paints a picture of what is now and what can be in the future. It is massively applicable.

Orwell obviously took inspiration from the *'s and their destruction of literature and controlling of history, uniformity and control etc Although it does seem as if he takes certain themes and runs away to the farthest possible end, making it a wee bit far fetched.

Orwell does lay it on a bit thick aswwell and it does get a bit tiresome when Winston is whinging all the time and cannae even enjoy a *! :smiley-laughing002: Does feel quite inward aswell, never really expanding much outside his wee tiny world.

I'm not a massive reader, however I'm thinking about starting to buy a few more proper books, rather than just your run of the mill fitbaw player's autobiography:56:

Was thinking about this. I'm into my Scottish history and the reviews seem quite good, going to have a look for some other good Scots books.

One of my Favourites - In Level Zero Heroes, Michael Golembesky follows the members of U.S. Marine Special Operations Team 8222 on their assignment to the remote and isolated Taliban stronghold known as Bala Murghab as they conduct special operations in an effort to break the Taliban’s grip on the Valley. What started out as a routine mission changed when two 82nd Airborne Paratroopers tragically drowned in the Bala Murghab River while trying to retrieve vital supplies from an air drop that had gone terribly wrong. In this one moment, the focus and purpose of the friendly forces at Forward Operating Base Todd, where Team 8222 was assigned, was forever altered as a massive clearing operation was initiated to break the Taliban’s stranglehold on the valley and recover the bodies.

I'm going to start on Thomas Picketty's Capital in the Twenty-First Century. Arthur Goldhammer's translation reads really well.

I've been reading A Song of Ice and Fire. Really enjoying it.

Have been reading One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest for a while but, since I've seen the movie and I know how it all plays out, I can't seem to get through it. I'll read 30 pages and put it down for a few days, and repeat. I've never read any Ken Kesey before and, since it's his most well known and apparently his best, I thought I'd start here. Will likely pick it up further on down the road.

Just started The Stand by Stephen King there earlier, since I've had it sitting on my shelf for about three years and I'm sick of it looking down at me, unread. At 1300+ pages it could stop a bullet, but I usually fly through King's novels. I hear it's one of his best, so I'm expecting good things!

I'll sleep when I'm dead-The dirty life and times of Warren Zevon.

Great book about arguably the most underrated songwriter and musician of all time.

I'm reading The Diary of Vaslav Nijinsky

A Russian ballet dancer, the greatest dancer of all time apparently, he wrote this diary as he was suffering a psychotic breakdown from which he never recovered.

Read that earlier this year. Very interesting insight into one of my favourite musicians but, Jesus Christ, he could be a real * *. Also knew he loved the drink but wasn't aware it was that bad. The Calvin Klein tshirt thing was ridiculous too. :smiley-laughing002:
