@Valhalla the quote function wasn't working there..

I would've got shot of Bain but obviously he's liked around the squad and even though he's a woeful keeper with his hands....he's weirdly more suited to us than Hart or Siegrist with playing out from the back. He's happy to be second/third choice as well..

Siegrist was one of the better keeper's in our league. Free. Just a backup. I know what you're saying about a youngster but this feels a bit like a stop gap until Oluwayemi's ready to go..

Writing was on the wall with this guy when he was only around 60 yards out of position in his debut away to Sarajevo.

Yeah agree with the guys above, love Jamesy and would have been more than happy to see him sign a year extension but a 3 year deal was criminal

I'd be surprised if we offered a player from Aberdeen as much as 10k a week on his first deal tbh, especially someone of his level.

Possibly closer to £30k his last year or 2 if "rumours" are correct but a lot less initially obviously and pretty sure we had a max of £30k the majority of his time with us.

Doesn't * matter as Larsson was here because he loved us, enjoyed his football, and his family where settled. It's not always about the money.

Back then 30k was a lot of money in the football world. Players were not earning 200k a week.

    This is it.

In recent times, we have been knocked out of European competitions at various stages, often losing over two legs, against teams that we financially dwarf.

    Happens far too often.

If what I remember larsson was 40k but Desmond actually paid that out himself ..as a club we haven't gone over 30k ..sky seemed to boast how huns have the 8 highest paid players in Scottish football some are on 70 k 80k a week the now apparently before Defoe 90k Ramsey was stupid wages and Kenny Miller was 65k a week when they were in division 1 ..and they wonder how there skint

    Ok and your point is?

My point was that whilst Larsson got good money at the end, that wasn't true at all for the initial years and he served us well and could well have doubled his money elsewhere but he chose to stay because of our club and his family.

Certainly at the end point of his career at Celtic other less talented players were earning much more. Was it £200k? Don't know but it wouldn't have been far off that when you consider Beckham and similar.

Did we give him away for nothing?

If so then hopefully there’s a 20% sell on clause or something in there just in case.

If * like Jack Hendry can get a big money move in Belgium, and even Vakoun Bayo more recently, then you never know.

Yet when it happens our fans seem to think the problem is money and make excuses why we can’t compete in Europe :39:

PSG gave us a pasting because of the financial gap yet we don't do it to teams when we're the PSG in the scenario.

Last decent team to knock us out of European competition was Valencia... in 2019. Year before was Zenit. Inter Milan in 2015/16.

In that time we have been knocked out or beaten by Molde, Lincoln Red Imps, Rosenborg, AEK Athens, Cluj, Copenhagen, Ferencvaros, Sparta Prague home and away, Midtjylland and Bodo home and away.

There's been some memorable nights in there, too - Leipzig, Lazio home and away and the draws against Man City.

Really poor considering that financially we dwarf most of those clubs who have got the better of us (some have absolutely skelped us in the process). On the flip side, we've barely given the big guns a scratch.

We have been overpaying players for a long time now - Ajeti, Boli, Barkas are just a few that are/were recently on the books. We must recruit better and pay what they are worth. I admit there is a time and place where we may have to push the boat out but I have no idea what was the thinking behind some of our signings when it is clear as day that we could've gone to Cluj or Ferencvaros or Molde and picked up a player at the fraction of the cost who would've made more of an impact than Barkas or Duffy or Boli etc. If we're paying top dollar for a player, they must be worth it. I understand that not all players will be a success but most of our big signings in recent times have been poorer than our cheaper ones. It's simply unacceptable.
