Perhaps. Or perhaps, despite our resources, last night was an accurate reflection of our current standing in European football.

Nobody is saying we are better than Utrecht, but people think we SHOULD be better.

How much does Utrecht charge for a season ticket? How much do we charge?

What's the average wage of a player in the Utrecht squad? What's our average wage?

No doubt about it, we SHOULD be beating a team like that comfortably without having to rely on the squad needs time to gel excuse. And if the typical Celtic fan is becoming accustomed to accepting the fate of absolutely no European success whatsoever, then we are entering dark dark days.

Show some * ambition and respect for your club who only a few years ago were in European FINALS of the very tournament that they are unable to get past the first round presently.

It will take more than a few league wins in a row for me to get over last night, I am ashamed and embarassed once again to be a Celtic fan.

pah go ahead and admit defeat it was a major upset it can happen doesnt mean we are below or better them imo we beat them comfotably in the first leg they hammered us in the secont mainly due to our team not gelling together and the ref was shocking and gave them so many breaks last night but still they were a better side than us last night.

Earning a fortune does not always translate into ability. Otherwise do you think we would have won the European Cup in the days when British players were earning thru'pence hapney.

this aint the sixties anymore football has evolved back then most starting 11s were made up of youth team players and buys of the same nationality. it was the same for every team.

ok lets have a look at your points here!!!

    1. dont start blaming the ref he had a decent game should have sent mertens off for butting brown but both fouls were pens no doubt hooiveld was minging last nite and a keeper diving at an attacker in the box feet first is suicidal!! zaluskas a shitbag with rubber wrists he got a hand to both pens but wasnt strong enough to keep them out!!
    2. the players/coaches lack balls pure and simple the new guys have all won european away games with their clubs in the past its a problem inherrent with the club why did we change the system from last week against utrecht? who are a dutch MOR team with 2 really good players in van wolfsboabie and mertens nothin special at all!!
    3. thats exactly what lenny tried to do with his team line up and formation and play on the counter but the players never got to grips with thge torrential weather conditions and the utreacht players did simple
    4. i have no idea why razz just wasnt rated by lenny id personally have kept him he has goals in him and would have been a good impact sub if your chasing a goal!!

Disagree. Its not about having a lack of ambition. Ambition and realism are not mutually exclusive.

The argument about how much we pay our players and how much they pay theirs is null and void if they beat us as far as i'm concerned...who is to say that some of their players don't deserve to be getting paid more than they are if they can turn us over like that? Or perhaps our lot are overpaid in comparison.

The ability of a footballer is not subject to trading standards. You can't say "We pay X amount for our season tickets", We pay our players X amount...So I demand success!"

If it were that easy, Chelsea would have won the CL by now and Celtic would never have won the European Cup or got to Seville.

im sorry no excuses celtic played * id admit that but he is right the ref was * crap he was so bad i thought he was not impartial at all the second penalty was gift to the other team. anyways even if they never got the breaks from the ref they still would have knocked us out celtic played so badly

you cant back up your argument with comparing the noughties with the sixties football finances were totally different in the sixties compared to the noughties chelsea made it to the champions league final fs missed out on winning due to penalties they won the epl last season.

Ok then if im not allowed to use the 60s as an example, then in terms of being a 'big club' these days, Porto had no right to win the Champions League....except they did!

And if we wanna use the Chelsea example then surely their fans should have been screaming "We are richer than Man Utd! John Terry had NO RIGHT to miss that penalty!"......c'mon!

Being a so called 'big club' counts for *! What counts is the ability to get the job done...which we were incapable of doing, and Utrecht were.

That tells u something about us - Not that our players have 'ripped us off', but that when the pressure was on they COULDN'T (not WOULDN'T) handle it.

Over-reaction in this case is totally justified, what are we to do take it in our stride.

wrong again porto are a big club through finance , history, and the manager . chelsea lost because terry missed a penalty. and i never said he had no right at all he missed because he made a mistake just like any human being .

Plain and simple management issue imo, Lennon picked a side on sunday that dominated. Simple as that. Why on earth did he change that? You do not change a team line-up that wins. Ledley and Juárez should have stayed at full back and why maloney didnt start is beyond me. * me off even more to hear MAF left straight away, what a * waste of money!!! why let a player who is clearly leaving to play. That's *!
Im not for a second saying the players don't deserve any blame because they deserve as much as Lenny and his team but this will shake them all up and im lenny will have said his due.
It will hurt for awhile but we need to remember that we weren't meant to expect much from europe this season, the league remains priority and i think a treble or double is long overdue from both club and especially players!!!
Time to belt up and shut up.

It is too early to make judgements but I think we saw a tactically niavity at this level. I cannot believe with a 2 goal start and no pressure on us that we didnt know how to shut up shop and hit on the break taking no chances. We should have killed the game with about 5 solid MFs rather than forest, Fortune etc. Truth is someone like Wattie Smith would have known * the game (he killed games all the way to the UEFA final a couple of years back). Admittedly we were never goof away from home in Europe but Lenny underestimated just how hard away ties are in Europe. its a big sifference even when the opposition are not great. Its very hard. Now at least in the past WGS and MON knew how to keep it closer away from home and against far better teams than these. An older head would have realised you must win the tie at home and try to kill the away tie.

No u seem to be incapable of articulating ur point sufficiently enough. Thing is, you cannot place success on a gradient of how 'big' you think a club this. It can never be more than an indicator. In some respects Porto are a big club but u've missed the point. If you bring season ticket prices and wages into an argument about how you SHOULD be beating somebody then to the likes of Real Madrid, Man Utd etc etc etc, Porto are not a big club. It just does not work like that!

And btw, you advised me that my argument cannot stretch back decades because finance and success of yesteryear mean nothing today...fair enough...but QUOTE: "they are indeed a big club they are top contenders in the portuguese league for DECADES"................................

By what divine right? We're in danger of becoming what Newcastle fans were like before they were relegated and given a much needed dose of reality. We must all realise where we stand in world football now lads and ladies, as hard as it is to take. Also, Braga showed against Sevilla that they're not a second rate team and they scored more against them than they did against us.
