I actualy have an origion story for my aracnophobia. Im pure terrified of any spider but i wasnt always up until about 7. We used to have these high trees you could go behind in my backgarden and one day I noticed this big spider a bit up the trees in his web. I wasnt scared at all i liked the thing and kept coming back to see it day after day and one day the * started crawlling down fukin 90mph and nearly landed on me face but i was able to peg it outa there. Ever since then even the tinniest * freezes me with fear.

Goes back to what I said. A rat looks more human than a Spider, you could (maybe at a stretch) impose human attributes on it (two eyes, a nose, etc)

What other threatening creature do humans regularly come into contact with that looks less human than a Spider? Other than things like small insects, which aren't threatening enough to bother our survival instinct anyway, there really isn't anything.

It can go the other way - if something looks too human, it sets off alarm bells. Something like C3PO, say, which looks humanish but clearly isn't, is ok. But something like a corpse, or a clown, or a mannequin, or (lets face it) the physically disabled - which all look too "normal" but clearly aren't - all set off the "danger" alarm and freak us out at a primal level. It's telling us "something is wrong, keep a * eye open".

At the other extreme is the "alien", things which are so completley beyond our capacity to relate too. You can't give human attributes to an eight-legged, eight-eyed, non-vertabrae that lays eggs. It's the very definition of different, and in nature different = unsafe. We even imagine something like a spider - just try and see how many monsters people have invented that can't have any human attributes applied to it. Give it a go.

Racism probably has it's roots in this.

"They look different, ergo are different, ergo are dangerous".

    Nature, I'm afraid.

I am afraid of spiders, and daddy long legs. Just 2 secs ago I seen one at my window, so I went over and I hit it with a paper, moved it a bit and it tried to fly so I screamed like a girl :52: I then smacked it again and threw it out.

In my mind you put on your Doctor Who glasses before saying this in a matter-the-fact but interested tone.

Look, no one knows how this works, I'm only taking an educated guess here :50::56:

But it might just be spiders themselves, rather than all Arachnids (which includes things like mites) that are the problem. I'm not a psychiatrist, y'know.
