Soccer / From Galilee to Glasgow - Haaretz Daily Newspaper | Israel News

Beram Kayal landed back in Israel last Friday after a whirlwind, dream week. In a span of just four days, the Galilee native officially signed a four-year contract with Scottish powerhouse Celtic, toured the team's impressive training facilities, acquainted himself with club officials, met his new coach Neil Lennon, and got a first-hand glimpse of the place he will call home for the foreseeable future. The only thing left for him to do was to arrange his visa status and return to Scotland, this time as a full-fledged member of one of soccer's illustrious clubs.

The quick shuttle to Glasgow only served to heighten Kayal's expectations for what awaits. In his first meeting with club chief executive officer Peter Lawwell in Scotland, Kayal could barely conceal his desire to wear the green and white strips.

The midfielder conveyed to Lawwell how flattered he was that the executive took the time to fly to Israel and finalize the agreement with his former club, Maccabi Haifa. Kayal told him that the move showed the Scottish side's seriousness in its intentions, and that he was so moved that he was willing to sign a contract for any sum that management saw fit to offer.

Lawwell smiled and presented the midfielder with a draft agreement that would pay him 400,000 euros per season. "I had many offers, some of them were even more enticing financially," Kayal told Haaretz. "Celtic's interest surprised me. I was with Maccabi Haifa during its training camp in Bulgaria, and my agent, Dudu Dahan, called to tell me that they want me."

"I was thrilled," Kayal said. "My father was also on the other end of that phone, and I could feel how much he wanted to cry from sheer joy. At that moment, I thought of [retired soccer star] Eyal Berkovic, who played for Celtic years ago. I told Dudu that I wasn't interested in any other offer, and that I wanted to go to Celtic. I made it clear that I was mentally and professionally ready to succeed there."

"I didn't want to speak to any other team because I was fearful and superstitious," he said. "I was afraid the deal wouldn't go through. I didn't want to fantasize [about joining Celtic] and then be disappointed. It was only after I signed the contract that I felt I was living a dream. I want to make it on this grand stage and I want to enjoy every minute of it."

Kayal added that he has no intention of resuming his playing career in Israel, though he would not rule out playing one last retirement season with Maccabi Haifa. His only focus is to embrace the challenge.

"Everything there is new to me," he said. "The players, the country, the language, the culture. But there's one thing that hasn't changed, and it's soccer. That is something I know how to do."

"I have no fears," he said. "I'm full of motivation to prove that I belong, and I believe that I'll be a fixture in the lineup by this season."

The Maccabi Haifa defector was quick to feel at home at Celtic, a high-pressure environment where winning is second nature. "I came from a club whose mantra was to compete for as many titles as possible and to always search for a way to win," Kayal said. "This is not new to me. I'm used to coping with pressure and demands to succeed."

When he first met Lennon, the coach shook his hand and escorted him to the video room. Appearing on the flat-screen television was footage of Kayal during last season's Premier League. Lennon surprised the midfielder when he told him that he had been keeping tabs on him for quite some time, and that he was just the player Celtic was looking for. "He told me that he is depending on me," Kayal said. "I was very moved. He said that I reminded him of himself when he played. Although they're depending on me, I'm not going there to take a stroll in the park. I will have to prove myself in practice, but I'm confident in my abilities to succeed at the highest level."

The 22-year-old Kayal has been carrying a heavy heart these past few months, and not just because Maccabi Haifa lost the Premier League championship in the 92nd minute, when Hapoel Tel Aviv scored to beat Beitar Jerusalem in the last match of the season. The midfielder was deeply hurt over Haifa's refusal to accommodate his request for a new contract. "They thought of their interests, and I thought of mine," he said. "Haifa did a lot for me, but they gave me an offer and I refused it. I told them how much I wanted, and I haven't heard from them since."

Kayal was also disappointed that management did not allow him to pursue an offer from Belgian club Standard Liege. The festering dissatisfaction affected his confidence and ability on the pitch. "I was disappointed because my dream was to go to Europe and it didn't happen even though it was within reach," he said.

"In retrospect, everything was for the best. I signed with a famous soccer club. I have more dreams to fulfill, but now my dream is to succeed with Celtic no less than I succeeded in Haifa."

That was a good read. I'm so glad that Lennon has picked these very proud players in Kayal and Jaurez who seem to be overwhelmed with our club and history and want to give there all to succeed. I dont think TM brought in players of this mentality. These sort of players are how you win championships. Its wierd that Lennon didnt get his signing through before the champ league deadline if he thinks he is going to be a key ingredient of the team. Really excited to see this guy playing. Looks like a complete all round midfielder, is a destroyer as well as a creator, a box to box midfielder that we have craved since Petrov least. I'm torn whether to get his name of Ledleys name on my Celtic top.

I'm quite proud that we've got someone from Mexico and someone from Israel. Shows we're looking.

Lads, just imagine a Juarez - Kayal - Ledley midfield against the huns! Walter wouldn't know what hit him.

Liege have a history of making some very, very good signings that end up making them millions. The fact that their scouting department was after him tells me much more than the fact that our scouting department was after him... not sure if that made sense though(?). Excited about this guy now. I think between he and Juarez we have the makings of a very good core in the center of midfield... think they'll compliment each other well.
