Celtic goalkeeper Benjamin Siegrist will undergo a Rapid Bucharest medical Monday after agreeing terms, sources have told Football Insider.

The 32-year-old has reached a full agreement to join the Neil Lennon-managed club on a permanent deal

The Scottish giants have granted Siegrist permission to jet out and finalise the deal in the next days.

The goalkeeper is set to work with former Celtic manager Lennon, who is currently in charge of Rapid Bucharest

Siegrist is under contract at Celtic Park until 2026 but has become a forgotten man at the Scottish Premiership club.

The Swiss goalkeeper joined Celtic back in 2022, but he’s made just two competitive appearances in that time.

Siegrist has plenty of experience to offer, having played 60 games in the Scottish Premiership throughout his career.

The majority of his game time came at Dundee United, where he kept 52 clean sheets in 145 appearances

Since signing for Celtic, he’s been a bit-part player who has been on the fringes of the squad while other goalkeepers have had more minutes

Following Joe Hart’s retirement, Celtic have been very active in the transfer window regarding goalkeepers.

The Hoops have signed Kasper Schmeichel and Viljami Sinisalo, opening the door for Siegrist to depart.

Makes sense for both him and us. Once we signed the 2 gks's in this window it was basically a certainty Seigrist would be sold.

Him leaving just tidies everything up in the GK department. We had done well to get Schmeichal and Sinisalo in. Getting Siegrist off the wage bill is a big plus.

We are actually likely to have reduced the wage bill, in the GK department anyways. Hart was on £15k a week and Siegrist was on about £13k per week apparently. Think it’s unlikely we have brought Sinisalo on anywhere near that. Be lucky if he’s on £10k a week. Schmeichal will probably be on what Hart was on.

Seems like we’ve done really good business all round. Now we need to get something done in the defence, the midfield and in the forward areas.

He played league cup matches when he joined, I think there was effort on our side to get him game time.

Weird one this, thought he looked an excellent signing.

Only made 2 appearances it says, in league cup in 2 years.

I know theirs possibility of him being poor professionalism, but don't believe that's been from the off.

Not that you can complain with Joe, but should have surely had more run outs.

He * off Ange when he brought back his aussie burd to the team hotel in Australia. He's been disinterested ever since. He * his chance. He was getting league cup games before that

Lol, I think that was the moment that Ange realised he was more interested in being on Tinder than in the goals.

Rodgers confirmed keeper Benji Siegrist is heading for the exit, with the former Dundee United no.1 on his way to Neil Lennon’s Rapid Bucharest. The Hoops gaffer said: “It’s fair to say that with Benji, he’ll be looking to move on. He’s been a really professional guy. His spirit, he’d done well at United and come into Celtic and maybe wanted to play more. When he didn’t, and I can only speak for my year with him, he was exemplary.

“His professionalism, everything about him was first class. And when I spoke last season, we thought that probably for him, in this part of his career, he needed to go and play. So I believe that will be the case and he will move on.”

I do find it funny how that trip to Australia pretty much killed his career here :giggle1:

It’s a pity Bolingoli left around the time we signed him, I think they would’ve been friends.

So he was totally professional the past year. Sounds like his bad attitude/gallivanting around Australia has been over played.

Celtic goalkeeper Benjamin Siegrist is set to complete a loan move to Rapid Bucharest, sources have told Football Insider.

The 32-year-old will fly to Romania tonight to finalise the deal and put pen to paper following medical tests at the club’s training ground

Siegrist has agreed to a two-year loan deal with the Romanian side which will see him through to the end of his current contract at Parkhead in 2026.

Managed by former Celtic boss Neil Lennon, Rapid Bucharest finished last season in sixth place, and currently sit tenth after two games

This comes after Football Insider exclusively revealed on 20 July that the goalkeeper had agreed terms over a move to Romania after the Hoops granted permission for his exit

Siegrist joined Celtic on a free transfer in 2022 after departing Dundee United to provide depth as a backup to Joe Hart.

During two years under Brendan Rodgers, the goalkeeper made just two appearances, both of which came in the League Cup during the 2022-23 season.

Nevertheless, he was part of a Celtic squad which lifted two league titles, the Scottish League Cup and the Scottish Cup.

The signings of Kasper Schmeichel and Viljami Sinisalo this summer saw the goalkeeper pushed further down the pecking order under Rodgers.

Sources say he is now looking forward to linking up with Lennon after falling out of favour at Celtic

Following Hart’s retirement at the end of last season, the club moved to strengthen in the goalkeeping department with two incoming deals, making space for Siegrist to leave.

While there is no option to buy upon the end of his loan deal in Bucharest, it now looks unlikely that the goalkeeper will return to Parkhead given his contract situation.

Well given this is a 2 year loan deal this effectively is also releasing Siegrist on a free transfer given his Celtic contract will be done when this loan finishes.

I imagine it was the only way, we will take a massive hit on his wages for 2 years but a large amount will be covered.

Your most likely correct that this is what we felt was the best way to cut our losses as best as possible on his remaining contract.
