nail on head. Like it or not Celtic play in Britain/UK and songs about fighting Britain will always be a minority niche in Britain that offends the majority. You just cant do that as it is next door to encitement when you know full well you are singing them with an audience that largely doesnt share or even understand. Unfortunately I suspect that wind up aspect is a large part of the attraction and that many who sing them have no balanced knowledge of what they are singing about. Thats the reality of away games.

So, political songs relating to fighting Britain can never have open airing in Britain. Its like singing loyalist songs in Dublin or zionist songs in Beiroot. They just dont belong there. Also, most of this stuff was written in the 20th century long after the main Irish immigration and after the club was formed so its really is an importation of political stuff and is not heritage that the immigrants brought with them. Its politics not heritage.

It does make a good atmostphere but why?

We have some great songs, can't they sing them away from home, instead of leaving ourselves wide open to critisism, possible bans and fines?

Oh ffs, you're hitting a tantrum because some people are not bothered by the references to the IRA in songs sung at our games...

And anyway, it was you who was talking about singing the Celtic Symphony, do mentions of the IRA in songs only bother you when it suits you?

Wether you like it or not Marie, there is a strong link, just as there is with The feilds of Athenry.

BTW does anyone else think that 4 leaf clover song is pish?

Celtic FC has over the years been a political club, just like Barcelona.

It also probably offends 80-90% of Scots.

Right guys, maybe we should give this thread a wee rest for a while, tempers are getting flared and I'd hate to see infractions getting handed out.

How about we resume this later?

I assume it's a similar problem like over here. football is "in". it's cool to watch football again. sadly success brings gloryhunters as well, or as I call them "customers". they come to CP, sit down, watch the game and leave again. not saying everyone who's quiet is a glory hunter, I respect that if somebody just doesn't want to sing, but that excuse doesn't suit everybody.

I would call myself as a passionate supporter and I can't think of going to any match without singing and screaming. even I sing songs when I go to see Celtic, even with my huge accent!

Bollocks, makes me want to change my mind.

    * Britain, discraceful nation, to the English we are insignificant at best.

Marie, you seem to be pushing this issue a bit too far.

It's not the fact that these songs have nothing to do with Celtic FC, it's the fact that these songs are Pro-IRA.

I mean their are plenty of songs we sing that have nothing to do with Celtic that are perfectly fine - Fields of Athenry, Let The People Sing etc.

I feel that a lot of people are more worried about our club being loved rather than these songs being offensive.

Whats song is worse? the boys of the old brigade, Charlie Adams sisters pants???

So i forgot about a reference to an IRA in a certain song, my apologies.

Like I say, I think the point I was trying to make was perfectly clear.

If IRA references dont bother u at the footie, thats up to you. No one will convince me singing about terrorists makes an atmosphere better.

If you read over the thread you'll see I don't have a problem with them, I am talking about the pro ira songs. :celt_2:

Why? they obviously don't understand the doctrine, its against English opression which we in Scotland also endure.

Even the provos didn't attack Scotland.
