FFS, people who resort to personal insults in a forum-debate need to grow up... :56:

I consider Celtic to be as much Irish as it is Scottish, its for us both. Rebel music as well asIrish music has been sung at Celtic games for years, before Woman started going to the fitba.
Parkhead was a meeting place for an oppressed people to come together and enjoy a game of football, like the camp nou, and sing their songs, IRA songs.

McCann came in and wanted to make CP more family freindly, and as part of his business plan he wanted to rid the ground of obvious IRA flags and songs. It worked, and although it was a business decision, he was ahead of his time as Rangers are now being dragged over the coals for their songs.

    There is definitelly a link.

correct. I dont think its political. Its about an individual's desperation for practicalities of survival not parties or paramilitaries. Its actually a tragic romatic ballad. I hate people who inject aggression and add-ons into it. They are insensitive agressive arseholes IMO. The famine period in Ireland was during a big relative lull in repubicanism after the 1798 rebellion a couple of generations earlier and Irish immigrants were largely non-political in outlook. The rise of popular politics was really a couple of generations later in the late 19th century and early 20th century.

Our songs are not about religious hatred, theirs are.
Are you saying the IRA are as bad as the British army and the British governments policies in Ireland, it was a reaction.

    No Oppression, no IRA.

Songs about Gary Glitter. Somehow I think their songs are much worse. We - in our songs - never talk about slaying people about religion. Remeber Celtic FC is a club open to all , regardless of colour , race or religion. :50:

Right ok, I see your point now and must admit, I've stood in the jungle week in week out, went to away games in between times and did join in and enjoy singing those songs, * I still do at times when I'm at home...but I think in all honesty Celtic fans should keep them from the game.

Right guys, I know when it comes time to bow out and I'm going to do that...I've got a big pile of ironing that I'm going to get done....seems more fun than digging myself into a hole.:50:

    back later x

it really is a false distintion in many ways this old vs new IRA thing. The old IRA also largely used guerrilla/terrorist tactics too. Not much choice against a big professional army its true but the distinction is a bit false.

I would however agree it has some validity in the distinction based on the fact that the longer it is ago, the less personal it is and the more people getting worked up about are just drama queening. I think the old IRA stuff is still just close enough in time to be a bit raw for some families who lost grandparents etc and the PIRA stuff is far too close in time. The 100 year rule for documents and census release is based on this idea that thats the sort of period before things are no longer personal and I think the same is true of divisive political issues.

    Exactly

So its not a sectarian song.

Celtic were formed to help poor irish immigrants who had travelled to glasgow following the famine, so its a song directly liked to our roots.

Its the IRA * I cant be doing with.

they where talking about deducting points ,not allowing fans to travel abroad ,playing behind closed doors etc ,do yous want to see celtic going down that road ,BTW rangers will there hanging themselves ,i think maybe there was crossed wires there ,probaly posted it wrongly so apoligies if it annoyed ,:50:
