Last night proved, yet again, the depth and quality needs massively improved.
Maeda injured and kyogo out the club and we (other than idah two goals) seemed to be extremely ineffective. We didn't really threaten them at all or have them running scared the way Leipzig would have been.

The goals we conceded, yet again highlights that if we don't have at least 3 of the 4 starters in the backline, then the backline is a * shambles.

But overall, for the game, we didn't actually embarrass ourselves. It wasn't a terrible performance when you accept the * defence needs worked on and the attacking line will never surely feature Yang again.

    Massively out of it.
They play with their all and I think they are good servants.

But some in our support think hard work is enough.
They are both massively below the level required. Even Trusty the jury is still out.

CCV and AJ are the only two that are remotely able to cut it at this level out of a back four. A back four which should have a decent enough rotation for each.
So out of 8 potential worthy players, we have 2.
One is insured and we run with 1 suitable UCL player in the backline.

    Mental

The scary thing for me is, it could easily have been 6-7 had it not been for Schmeichel, a missed penalty, and generally poor finishing Villa.
That makes it strange for me how people can think any of our defenders played well.
We were ripped open so many times, the defence were all over the place, and tbh, Mcgregor offered no cover in front of them too.
Both wide men were awful, and the options we had from the bench put us in a bad light.
Overall a frustrating night, and could, and maybe should have been a helluva lot worse.

Bit of a strange one for me. Villa had a lot to play for, for us it was a glorified friendly, we were never going to make the top 8 yesterday.

and for me Aston Villa are just a very good side! We showed resilience coming back, but you could see the gulf in quality when they switched up a gear or two. Plus individual errors didnt help neither. With CCV, Maeda, Tierney, Jota,… it would have been a different game, however still think Villa would have way more quality.

Main point for me though was: Idah scoring twice will be such a boost to his confidence and thats whats needed. A striker who will score goals! Whoever is coming in as a Kyogo replacement will need to get Idah out of the team and that might become a hard thing to do. That if he kicks on after last night ofcourse.

and oh yes, we are in need of real physicality! Calmac just isnt suited to that position in those sort of games on his own. If a second C(d)M would be deployed with sitting deep in those games it would help a lot. Rather then 2 attacking CM and Calmac on an island on its own.

Think it highlighted what we already knew.

    LB
    CDM
    CB
    Wing

Those are the areas we need better in if we want to really be able to compete against the better sides consistently. We can do it every so often but to be more consistent we need better players in those positions.

We should add in... punt the ball away if it's looking in anyway dodgy.

I wouldn't say we didn't threaten them. We scored 2 excellent goals, went close with shots from Kuhn and Hatate and were in good positions again but poor passing or final ball let us down. That's a reasonable amount against the calibre of opposition. The Key is to make the most of our chances and even more importantly keep things tight in defence.

Amazed how far off it we were physically yesterday.

Taylor, Hatate, Scales, McGregor, and Yang all struggled at various points with either speed, strength or stamina.

Engels looked ok, but seems to be withdrawn around 60 mins most games atm.

That leaves as outfield players Johnston, Idah, Kuhn, Trusty as the only outfield players fully able to last the 95+ mins physically

Rodgers is still in the business of building a team of pace and power, hopefully this current transfer window will remedy some of that. Rome wasn't built in a day, and it will take some time and considerable money invested, before we can be an elite team in Europe again.

Our main problem to me, is our captain Calum McGregor is undroppable, and that is a mega headache for Rodgers and our support, when it is patently obvious we need a big, pacy physically imposing CDM to shield the defense and break up counter attacks. Even Clement has had the balls to drop his captain, so I don't see why Rodgers thinks it is a big deal to drop an under performing McGregor, who is totally not suited to being a No.6, or at the very least move McGregor forward into a more attacking role.

That said, I think this could well be McGregor's swan song year, because I can't see him being able to continue to play at the top level next year, so succession planning should be uppermost in Rodger's forward planning I feel.

We sorely missed CCV and Maeda on a good couple of cases... Nothing we can do about that now...
