I am with you Keltoi, no player should be worth less when playing for Scotland because he happens to be a Rangers player, we would want our guys who play for Scotland to get equal respect from Gers fans so it has to cut both ways. As for someone who presumably is a UK citizen cheering Italy against Scotland............. I just cant understand it, when you think of all those people who crave UK Citizenship, he should think himself lucky.

but look at our history with scotland they tried to stop us flying the tri colour they have even said that fields of athenry is sectarian and we shouldnt be allowed to sing a soldiers song how can yous support a country that dosent give a * about celtic the sfa dont like us because we are proud of our irish roots and i am proud of my irish heritage if it wasnt for the irish i probably wouldnt have been born ... so * bless the irish i mean i love scotland but come on someone left a thread a while ago about scotland going to have an annuall orange weekend to bring tourism to scotland what the * is that all about ? ... i love ireland and i love the people and most people in ireland love celtic .... my opinions may sound sectarian to some but my opinoins arent based on sectarianism ..... should listen to the song celtic first celtic last celtic overall by charlie and the bhoys :50:

I actually dont think anything you have said there is sectarian and I can fully understand your concerns ref the past goings on with the attempted banning of tricolour flying and the singing of certain songs. In my opinion there is actually a greater problem with anti English sentiment in Scotland post Devolution, than anti Irish feeling, though I accept that alot more effort has been put into dealing with sectariaism that has its basis in offending Irishness and Catholasism rather than the villifying of a few English people who are simplly expected to have a thicker skin because of all the perceved benefits that some Scots believe we have down here. That said, I know that some Scots still have a "hang up" about Catholics (especially those of Irish decent) because I have heard them at it whilst I worked in Scotland in the past 5 or so years and it is totally wrong.

However, back to the football, I dont care who plays for Scotland as long as they beat the opposition (England excepted) they will always have my support when playing overseas teams.

I can see that bad stuff in the past can have a knock on affect at making some tims less supportive of the national team but to become really hostile to it creates a vicious circle:

you get some bad treatment in the past so you become anti-Scotland then people become more hostile cause it looks like traitor behaviour so you get worse treatment and are even less likely to support etc etc.

The effect of letting non-selection of some of the lions nearly 40 years back etc lead to you not supporting the team today is that it feeds the myth that tims are generally disloyal or disinterested in Scotland when its actually a small minority (we have had many threads and polls on this). Its a vicious circle that only tims themseves can break by forgiving the past and showing tolerance for the fact that the team and support has to include and represent everyone from tim to loyalist and the majority who are neither. IMO you should never abandon something because it has (in this case had) a significant bad element. There will always be a few baddies though.

As for supporting an international team because of heritage going back a few generations, I have always felt that you should keep ancestral international teams as a 2nd team rather than dump your own country. The number of games where your country and your ancestral country are going to play each other will be very limited in the average lifetime anyway so a few slighlty confused nights wont matter too much. Just a personal opinion on the matter.

Since I'm a Serb, I'm a Serbia's fan. However, I like to see Ireland and Scotland winning.

I support ROI because I am Irish. But it is up to each individual. You are allowed to support whoever you want.

If you went to Scotland games you would see that a lot of the huns who say things like that don't support Scotland for having the similar ideas to your own!

I don't 'mix' with them..I go to the games with my mates, sit with my mates, drink with my mates and the only time i 'mix' is when celebrating a goal and or singing.

Not all Rangers fans are sectarian bigots and those who are don't support Scotland because they don't want to support a team with Celts in it.

TBH, I dont have strong feelings for either national team. My identity as a celtic fan sums up my heritage and identity much more than either national identity.
