I wonder if hes been bought in one of those analysis things, maybe his assists stats were good, but noone actually looked into it and it turned out his team were * hot at setpieces, and hed hit a few decent ones in.

Cant begin to imagine what else it was based on.

I watch/listen to a podcast that is centred around analytics for us. From matches to current players and prospective players and they were dead against us buying him as he wasn't a good fit for our style of play, and so it is transpiring.

It's absolutely confidence, it's shot just now.

The challenge is how do you get that back in the pressure cooker that is playing for Celtic?
Sometimes the jersey is just too heavy for some but I'd love to see Engels rise to that challenge.
He's going to need to do a lot of work, coaching and support.

What he definitely doesn't need is fans getting on his back tho - forget the price, treat him like any other young 21 year old and let's get behind him - he might yet surprise a few.

Without a doubt this is a huge season for him. We've seen glimpses of what hes good at and can bring to the team, but he must be producing regularly. For me now the little we've seen of Nygren automatically puts him infront of Engels.

Hopefully competition will be something he thrives on.

His confidence shouldn't be shot in pre season when we're turning up behind Hampden to play Queens Park..

Just strutting about. Was moaning like a * against Estrela. Again yesterday..

He has some talent but I fear for him..

Even yesterday, he's supposed to have this top technique but like 99 percent of his shots from open play or in the box, he swings wildly and it goes over the bar. His spraying of the passes have gotten worse as times gone on. He looks * poor in possession..

Turns really stiff. Doesn't use his body well in 50/50's unless he's trying to go down to win a foul but rarely beasts someone like he was doing against the diets and Shankland on his debut or game after, can't mind..

So, how long are you willing to give him before you can't use that as an excuse. If he can turn things around and start having an influence in a game, then I will be the first person to come on here and say I was wrong however, I've been watching football for over 60 odd years and I can usually spot a good player after a few games.

    He needs the whole season.

For what we paid, we may feel entitled to more from him straight off the bat. But with age and the fee we paid we need to invest in developing him.

As an aside, Im not convinced the way we set up gets the best out of any of our midfielders. So there is that as well.

You keep going on about him being young as an excuse. He is 21 years old, he is a young player.

Just really weird how you've targeted my post when in my post I've clearly said hes had a terrible pre season and needs to shape up ASAP

You can see he is a good player . Think he needs to read the game a bit better myself. Gets caught in possession sum times to easy.

Not targeting your post m8 just replying to your post as, while I appreciate he is still young, he has done absolutely nothing to show that he has the potential to be a good player. There are loads of players out there who are even younger that him and you just know that they are good players with potential (just look at some of the Ahax players the other night) but I just don't see it with Engels. As, i said, I hope he proves me wrong and, if he does, I will hold my hands up and apologise

Some people think because we paid £11 million for him there must be a player hiding in there that’s suddenly going to burst out when he gets a little bit older or gets a good pre-season or improves his confidence ect ect. It’s not gonna happen, he is what he is, which is very very average some might even say *.

Find it mental folk are turning on him before a competitive ball is kicked this season..

There are definitely areas he needs to improve, same as all young players..

The midfield looks much more balanced and dynamic with Nygren in it so he has a fight for his place and needs adapt quickly, but there's definitely a player there, he's shown that already.

The competition is essential for us and it may help him too.

Big season no doubt, but us turning on him at this point benefits nobody, much like another young player in Idah.

Do people want to know why Engels confidence is shot to pieces?

Its because he knows better than anyone that he simply isn’t anywhere near the quality of his fellow midfielders Hatate and Calumn McGregor, and to make matters worse Benjamin Nygren has turned up and is completely outshining him in games and no doubt in training also. The fact he has a quite ridiculous £11 million price tag hanging over his head is not going to do his confidence any good either.

Put yourself in his shoes, if you went to work and your colleagues were clearly of a much higher standard than you and therefore making you appear very poor at your job, would you be brimming with confidence?

People may say it should inspire him to put the hard work in and get up to their standard but he just doesn’t possess the ability to do that, and he knows that better than anyone.

You are correct. We need to get rid of our better midfielders so Engels feels like Iniesta.

Probably the case in all honesty, but to be a Celtic player he need to be able to handle that preassure.

Gotta be honest and say I agree with almost nothing in this post... Which is actually quite rare, even on this forum...

If your colleagues are better than you, you learn from them... Our entire history is littered with "lesser" players who hold places in the team by effort and determination, and Engels is FAR from a bad player...

Can't believe people are so against a player for a transfer fee that he had no part in... Personally, I think there's a cracking player there, we just need to work out how to unlock it and utilise it...

You can also turn that the other way, playing with and training with better players often makes you raise your game and improve. It’s the same in the arts and other disciplines.
