i'm starting college in september doing a web development course, you guys may come in handy for that :icon_mrgreen:

 

Nobody could claim to know it all especialy the companies who charge lots of money to 'guarantee' to get you to the top of Google.

I have some techniques I use to help get a site up the rankings but they are many and varied and take time, usually months depending on the type of site content.

Google Analytics and webmaster tools are a very useful addition to the toolbox but it takes a lot of sifting through the data and creating sitemaps really does help too, usually in XML format as required by Google. Once they have it the other search engines seem to use their info in conjuction.

 

Happy to help you out. Forget the graphic *, concentrate on the coding that goes on behind a site, PHP, javascript, MySQL (or any other database).

That's assuming Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP - LAMP stack as it's referred to.

Backlinks are crucial to a site's success but where to start? It really depends on the content and quality of your site, is it something many people would enjoy reading or just a site to post pics for your friends?

Google will find your site anyway but get listed in directories like DMOZ and yahoo for starters, where allowed join relevant forums and put a link to your site in your signature and posts. Create a forum on your own site if it's getting a lot of traffic. Links from social media are invaluable.
