I don’t think that’s what you thought he meant. Think you are being disingenuous there.

    He completely misinterpreted my post.

I've seen it takes fans more than a 3-4 games to work out a new managers weakness. Most people here have already done it. Its a credit and * compliment, not a backhanded swipe at ya.

Weaknesses are fine. No one is perfect. That’s why we adapt.

Our best recent manager delivered some horrendous results in Europe (against the best admittedly) because he refused to bend on his philosophy.

I felt that was a failing of his too.

Unless you are manager of the best players on the planet I think you should be studying your opponents and adapting/tailoring your team to combat/contain the opposition.

To add to this, comparing van Marwijk team to Anges, is a little unfair in the sense that if you ever heard Ange talk about the national team it was all about changing the mentality from being a (nation) team that would cop brave losses but one that was there to win. Van Marwijk just had to have 11 players behind the ball for 3 matches then leave.

Anges first season at Brisbane he inherited a complete basket case of a club, and a rabble that had quite literally been run by a drunk. They finished 2nd last but that team had been recruited before he got there, he then won two titles been the best defensive team and then the 2nd best.
He then went to Melbourne where he had to turn over 9 of 22 players, what was then the worst Melbourne team ever the season before, still they weren't great defensively, he pushed them to 3rd in a salary capped season.

It's a fallacy that he forgets about defending, at the same time and as we've clearly seen its not his priority at the start.

I think he'll have massive issues if he doesn't have some solutions to what is going on at the back and I'm sure he will be working just as hard on that.

I just hope things are moving along better before we play those * in a few weeks time.

    No argument there.

As you imply, adapt is the keyword. I've seen Ange coach literally over a 100 matches. His teams score of goals and concede lots of goals.

this is 10 years old. Nothings changed:

    Sound familiar?

its not a fallacy. Its empirical fact. As someone posted earlier, even in the J -League when he was doing well, he had one of the worse GD's.

As for the player turnover in Melbourne Victory, I remember that time. He didn't *have* to do what he did. Many of the fans were livid that he gutted the squad, and then exited the job as a work in progress to coach the NT. Much like when he exited the "dynasty" he was going to create at Brisbane. Much like he bailed on taking the NT to Russia.

I said last night if we score 4 every game we will win most matches.

You can’t hang you hat on that though. It’s unobtainable.

Listen. The “Celtic Way” is beautiful inventive football and when done right it’s a joy. Even our greatest manager had a core of hard men. People to do the water carrying to let the flair players express themselves.

You need a balance. That’s why I’m happy with McCarthy coming in. Ange needs to let the spoilers get on with spoiling though and not ask them to do things they aren’t capable of.

Paraphrasing here but our greatest manager told our greatest Captain and arguably greatest player to clear the ball and give it to someone who could pass/recycle it better.

If Jock Stein can tell Cesar to stick to what he’s good at then Ange can tell Ralston to stick to what he’s good at.

In that period they lost 6 out of 58 matches (start of the 36 run to the end of the 11/12 season) in the league (and finals) I wouldn't change my style either

What he did for the time was revolutionary for the A-League. But the A-League was.. what... 5 years old. Still, unequalled effort. Having said that If he is as inflexible as his history suggests, and as unfocused on defensive organization, I I suspect he will get found at this level. If the fan in the stand can see the failings, i'd reckon every manager in the league already has too.

As a massive victory supporter, if anyone was gutted by the turn over of players from that squad, they would've been heart fans. That was a deplorable squad that had some of the worst players to ever play in the a-league. Fabio, Diogo Ferriera, Cereal, Julius Davies. Then veteran who were clearly past it the year before, Kemp, brebner, pondeljak, Vargas. They were all done. The changes proved to be right because the key players went on to win everything with muscat.

Him bailing is a different story and they all have different reasons, selfishly I didn't want him to take the NT job but I don't begrudge him for walking away from it when he wasn't allowed to do his job.
He isn't unfallable, far from it but he gets it right more than he doesn't.
