I don't think Martin's take is that mental. We lost badly in that game and badly in Europe. I do think we have adapted how we play over the past two years, though. We rarely go as * for leather against comparable opponents as we did that first year Ange was in. Defence was an afterthought that year, we got punished for it and we've adapted since.

To me, the bigger ongoing issue is the timing of squad rotation. We rarely rotate sufficiently when it is sensible to do so, leading to decent players getting fed up or losing sharpness after months without football, then randomly shuffle a load of players in for an away game. That's the pattern I'm concerned about. There is absolutely no one here that thought last weekend's lineup made sense for that game, it's a bit of a concern that the manager thought it was a-ok.

Maybe our tactics could do with some tweaking but that didn't lose us the game. If we can get squad rotation down, we'd have a stronger squad and better lineups for games like this.

 

I think we may see a change of formation from Ange next year, with the whole midfield being completely changed and reconstructed.
