I think you may have hit the nail on the head. A lot of players new to the CL and wanting to leave their mark, they probably feel fairly deflated given how it's gone so far. It was a wake-up call for both us and them, we're not as far ahead as we thought we were. But last year we responded well to the pressure and bounced back, I think today shows they've still got that fight in them.

 

I love the big man, and I love his attitude and the way we play. That said I need to be honest and people will probably think it’s controversial and will disagree.

Our pressing game is utter *. We can overwhelm teams with sheer energy by getting in their faces, but in terms of an organised press, it’s nowhere to be seen.

More often than not in the last ten games or so, it’s Kyogo, O’Riley, and Maeda when he’s playing, just aimlessly sprinting at the ball.

That’s a coaching failure. There’s nothing wrong with sitting in for fives minutes, regrouping, then pressing in numbers. Our best players are * after 55 minutes because they are chasing lost causes.

I’d bet on my da and his 3 mates in their late 50s to be able to pass it around 2 players sprinting at them, let alone Champions League sides.

Pressing is only effective if organised properly. I’d love to see it, but being honest, we’re all over the shop. Plenty of effort and loads of gaps.

 

Jota has played 12 games in 10 weeks and we are just off the back of a 2 week international break were he would have had some time off. I wouldn't say that's an overly hectic schedule tbh. The fact he looks so fatigued already is a real concern.

 

A couple of weeks ago he's a genius, and now there's real question marks over his game-management and tactics.

For me, he's just trying to use the squad and coming to realise that some of them aren't taking the opportunities we hoped they would. I think that's a reason for how deflated he's looked in recent times. Squad players just not stepping up to the mark when required.

I have no long-term fears over this group of players though. We've only dropped 3 points in the league out of 9 games. Not to mention we're landing blows on UCL opposition (away from home too). I remember the days growing up when we would lose an early goal almost every away game in Europe and that would be that. We've been competitive so far this season at the highest level in Europe and that's a positive step. That's without even having the opportunity to play our 2 home games against the sides similar to us in the group.

The substitutions have at times raised an eyebrow. Don't know why he was happy to have a midfield of Mooy, McCarthy, and Abdilgaard too. But there are positives there and we were hardly going to run over every domestic team we played over the course of a 38-game season. Some perspective needed.

Top of the league and a big chance to secure last-16 qualification if we win our 2 home games and Madrid win theirs. Would've taken that back in August.

 

Mate, I was at the RBL game & he was losing his * running down the line screaming at Welsh at times through the game. Granted he's not normally that animated but he's got it in him. I reckon he's one of those guys that when he does lose his *, people listen as its unusual.

 

“utter *” is harsh but I tend to agree overall. Its not often a coherent press, as far as I can see at least.

 

I love a nice calmly thought out post. Exactly correct. Nobody remembers games where it seems tight. Even if we scored 4 times and also had another 2 offside/onside 1 on 1s with clear handball and shirt pulling red card offences all ignored to make the game seem "tight"

This is a concerted effort by refs and the media to make us all think we're playing badly. We're not. Yes our finishing isn't up there yet but putting the ball in the net 4 times is actually very good. That goal at the end aswel was actually perfect. That kind of goal last season sparked us alive. Watch us steam roll the next set of games.

 

Yeah totally agree. And agree with the media comment as well. How often did we hear in the run up to the St Johnstone game that it was "1 win in 5". 3 of them being against UCL sides. The reality heading into yesterday's game is that the only stat that should've been getting spoken about was 7 wins in 8

But hey ho, that would've reflected quite well on Celtic after all.

 

The amount of chances missed in that game was phenomenal ange has been complaining about finishing chances since start of season …. Which begs the question why hasn’t he done anything about it

I think at the moment we're just struggling to be in the CL and the league at the same time. Our A team is very good, our B team is substandard rangers quality lol. It is hard to find the balance but there's still a looooooong way to go!

 

Needs tp drop maeda and what he sees in mooy ill never know,am i the only one who thinks mooy is just not good enough for us.

 

What does that even mean?
Ange gave us a system and philosophy which is tailored to create as many chances as we can as often as we can and it has worked wonders since he came in, finishing the chances is up to the players no one else.

If we weren't creating chances then that's a different story, that would be up to ange to fix.

 

It's a strange one. Our pressing against real Madrid and rangers was spot on. Don't know what's happened since then but we're making really poor decisions.

Another thing from yesterday and the motherwell game is why do we not just see the game out. I get that ange wants attacking football and scoring goals but with 10 minutes to go, one goal up, why are we still taking quick throw in, quick free kicks and horsing up the park. Surely if we keep the ball and get them chasing us, as we're well capable of doing regardless of whose on the park, it makes it far more comfortable.

a actually think the opposite mate, before the subs it was wave after wave of attack looking for the second killer goal, by bringing those subs on looked like we were just trying to see the game out at 1-0 because subbing our 3 most creative players who were creating chance after chance for the striker for 3 defensive midfielder s cries of “ let’s just see this game out a 1-0”, which is daft especially at away grounds were you always know from a set piece they have a chance with a melee in the box and ball just dropping to 1 of their players which eventually happened,

 

This slump reminds me of the second half of last season. We'd hammer a couple teams, then grind out a 1-0 or drop a couple points, then we'd hammer another team. That scintillating form came and went in waves, in bursts.

The difference this season is the heightened expectations among the support. These expectations have made us a bit more shrill in the days where we don't play well. Work needs done yes but just remember the second half of last season, these ruts don't tend to last too long

 

Aye I get the subs that came on were all defensive but we didn't play that way. We still bombed forward and gave the ball away constantly trying to attack. Keep the ball, slow the tempo down, get into a shape, and make it very difficult for them to get the ball back with our passing and movement. Basically, see the game out last 10.

There's no doubt we're a great team to watch under ange but it test the blood pressure at times.
