I'm not a fan of commentators who take the spotlight from the games.

I watching football, not a program on Comedy Central. How more they shut up, how better for me.

I thought it was funny. Not in a bad way, just to hear the different and very cheesey lingo used.

They didn't half remind you Kasey Kellar was injured!

"Oh my Lord, Samaras scores a PK into the postage stamp area of the Goaltenders area!" They never actually said that but i have heard them come out with this sort of *:icon_mrgreen:

Watched the build up program and one of the sounders players was talking about their last league win" It was good forr us cause we managed to sneak the 3 pointer and come hme with the W" basic FOOTBALL translation " It was good for us cause we managed to win the game and come home with the 3 points".

    As previously said; *.

    Like really, * embarrassing.

  8. I think it was mostly funny for people who haven't spent much (or any time) here in the States.. Not only is the lingo different here for association football, its different for just about everything.

If you ask someone here where the lift is in a building, they'll look at you like you are a nutter and walk away. That's just the way it is.

And I gotta tell ya. The yanks that go over to Scotland simply cannot stop laughing at Scottish slang. America is like Australia. It's * off in the middle of the oceans and separated from EVERYTHING, except for our wintry Northern neighbours and the Mexicans in the South, which most people here want a fully armed Brigade and a line of tanks lining the border...

So expect us to talk different.

Seen most of the world cup over in florida, the american commentators were funny at first, sometimes over dramatic, but you get used to them and understand what they are on about. Dunno how it is with club games but they were usually paired with a english commentator for the world cup. They had a moron in the studio who clearly knew nothing about football, alexi lalas, jurgen klinsmann and steve mcmannaman had to bail him out lol klinsmann is a good pundit though, straight to the point and knows what he is talking about.

Erm well, I don't know about America, but in Canada we aren't ignorant enough to not know what a lift is. Most people know what it means even if it's not our chosen word. I disagree about your analogy and comparing America to Australia, considering how many ex-pats we have here in North America from all over the world. I don't think in this day and age of instant information any developed nation is separate from anything let alone everything, as you say.

Anyway, lingo is different everywhere, in every pocket of the world. There will be sub-cultures within cultures with their own lingo. I agree foreigners should expect you to talk different, but I think it's obvious enough that they should. American commentary is different from what people find over in the UK, as Spanish commentary is different, etc.

I'm not a fan of some English commentary because it sounds like they just picked a stiff Oxford type to mumble along with the game. And I'm not a fan of some American commentary because it would be better suited to baseball. But some English commentators are good and some American (or Canadian) commentators are good. For me it isn't the nationality of the commentator but whether or not they suck.

  13. Eh most people here use the internet for Facebook, youtube, and playing games... They aren't about looking up the information about what to call different things, especially "elevators".

And Americans don't travel. Simply put. They do not leave this country. They cannot afford to. In Britain and Europe you can just hop on a ferry and a train and go wherever you want, you don't have to spend a fortune to travel. No one here has passports. No on here knows anything about what people in Britain call anything. I say "no one" very liberally, just because I live in D.C... Its different here. People from all over the world live here. Same with New York. But even a state like Florida, Texas, Colorado, Wisconsin, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Utah, or Oklahoma is comparatively "shut off" from the world. Sorry we yanks are so * ignorant over here. It's just the way it is. And I am American, so I think I am within my right to bash it.

It's a crying shame that the ESPN commentators are as stupid as they are, it really is. I'm sorry. Anyhow this is getting less and less to do with Celtic so I think this thread is going to get moved soon haha.

:97: Dude there was no need to get defensive I was just disagreeing with you about America being shut off. And I still very much disagree with you, given America's status as hegemony, given how many Americans are global citizens from all over the country, etc. But I understand you don't want to continue this argument, so I will let it go as well.

I guess one of the reasons American commentary can be annoying (in my opinion) is because they take their cue from commentators of different sports. I absolutely despise the commentary in hockey, but then I despise everything about professional hockey (I'm a horrible Canadian), and when I hear commentating similarities in football (like terms used, or that gameshow host type of voice) it makes me cringe.

Actually, I would argue that America's hegemony would in result in the fact that Americans might know less about other cultures than others.

I for example know a lot about American culture because American culture is omnipresent here. The fact that Brussels is packed with American expats does not mean that Americans in general will know anything about Belgium.

No, it is the inverse. America's culture is present all over the world and I would even argue that the US are still a leading power, not because of military power, nor because of economic power, but because of the fact that their culture is everywhere. And because American culture is everywhere, the knowledge of Americans in general about other cultures might be limited.

So in a sense, America might be considered to be shut off just because of the fact that it is everywhere.
