the vast majority of this country doesnt care about soccer so why would they waste time and money bringing over British commentators for such a meaningless game?

For the purposes of public education and self-betterment, my good fellow! :icon_mrgreen:

You could subsidise it under the federal literacy program, as free English lessons. :50:

as an american, i must say they are atrocious. but they're atrocious doing our own sports. half the time, the information they give is incorrect and they have a persistent need to fill all of the time available talking about nothing. "this stadium has a 40 foot long roof, this city is near a lake, this player has an extra nipple" it's all meant to shield their lack of knowledge and they feel they're adding entertainment or education for the viewers. how about you shut your hole and tell us something we don't know. ffs, i want to go mel gibson on someone after watching the world cup for a month and now having to listen to this drivel. faux excitement and over emphasis on every syllable. it's embarrasing

sadly, this isn't far from reality:

    :56: Good clip mate.

The thing that I find uneasy about the U.S. commentators is that they don't feel honest.

It always comes across like there's this reality gap between the excitement they expresss and the passion they actually feel for the game. I mean, anyone who's really passionate about football knows all about the various world leagues, the different styles of different countries etc. Most american commentators just don't - it's not the fact they are ill-informed, but the fact they don't care enough to get informed.

A lot of the time they come across like generic sports commentators, who just happen to have been "assigned" to cover the football. Like the channel boss just told them,
"You're on the soccer this season Randy."
    "Aw dang - the soccer?"
"You're the man Randy. Do real good and you might get promoted to ice hockey next year."

it's either this or it's ex players who think that since they got a cap for the USA U-19's once and played 3 seasons with the Tampa Bay Rowdies, their expertise is unmatched and they can give an american perspective with all this amazing knowledge. what comes out is a pile of * stacked to the sky. fact: the entire roster of american commentators are a shower of tossers.

Well, you may be right on that one.

Perhaps it's just a time factor thing, I mean it's still a developing sport in the States. Maybe when the next wave of commentators comes along, it'll be people who were brought up on the game, and are really tuned in.

you know hockey is just about as "popular" as soccer is?...its hardly ever on tv here. Never on ESPN or any other major network until the playoffs come around

BTW this thread is pointless, how often do yall actually hear American commentators? Its like me saying we should bring over some Scots to cover the NFL

That was kinda my point - footie is so low on the agenda that even the hockey would be a step up.

I think for most people it's not any kind of anti-american thing, we just find their commentary amusing and a bit cheesy. I don't mind them. It's the ads that really shock me - so many of them, so often, and so abysmal. Amazes me people actually put up with it...

its the reason why i love footie so much over here. the NFL is unwatchable. the amount of times they have to stop a game for commercials and plugs is unbearable. the game itself takes 4 hours to complete whereas 20 years ago it only took 2 hrs 15. At this rate it'll drone on as long as cricket in no time. It's the american way. Squeeze every last nickel and dime out of anything going across the airwaves and if the viewers experience is diminished in the process then they can GTF

Try watching an American football game or a basketball game. Theres commercial breaks every 5 minutes or so. Im just used to it by now, dont even really notice them anymore.

And yea american soccer commentators are garbage lol

Football will always be my passion, i played it for 12 years and no sport will ever replace it. I put up with the commercials because i love the game so much. And the games are never 4 hours lol they usually go about 3 hours....and its the best 3 hours of Sundays

EDIT: * baseball...puts me to sleep

    Loving those clips mate!

That's the thing - these guys are even more over the top than the U.S. commentators, but you really feel they mean it. They are actually football-crazed madmen. Goooooooooooooooooooooollllllllllllllllllllll. :56:

yea during the Super Bowl a 30 sec ad cost $2.6 million last year. Companies spend millions making super bowl commericals because its the most watched event in America
