Wilson was solid but I love Efe - he's different to any defender we've had in a long time.

This says it all for me. I love both players but Efe is just a strange one. He seems like a bit of a 5 aside player, no natural position. Wilson at least was a classic sweeper type.

Ambrose for me , may have the odd hairy moment but takes on more responsibility . I think Wilson played a yard behind his cb partner and thus kept the opposition on side . Virgil the best cb we have had in yrs and I would place Ambrose next just ahead of Wilson .

Neil Lennon said when he signed VVD he was going to partner Wilson at the back and the. Wilson asked to leave, would have been good to see that partnership.

Was Van Dijk not signed after Wilson left?

    Positives
Efe able to drive play up the park and change from defence to attack very quickly, can also dribble well.
Wilson very disciplined holds his line well and a bit more "no nonsense".

    Negatives
Efe prone to mistakes on the ball and balls over the top of him quite often result in a opposition player getting 1 on 1 with the keeper. Could be better at heading, especially in front of goal.
Wilson seemed to get muscled off the ball a lot and would go down to easily. Absolutely no attacking qualities and terrible in front of goal as far as I can remember.

    Efe edges it for me.

Wilson, Mulgrew, VVD, Rogne, Wanyama were/are all better than Ambrose defensively IMO

    Wilson, easily.

Ambrose is more entertaining, but I don't really want our CB's to be flashy. Wilson was solid in his last season, barely put a foot wrong. Him and VVD at the back would have been an absolute joy.

I doubt Lenny seen that coming with Wilson, it was right out of the blue.

My first instinct was that Wilson was the better defender and Ambrose the better ball player, but is that really true? I remember Emenike ripping Wilson a new one, so they switched Ambrose on him. Ambrose wasn't strong enough to deal with him either, yet somehow used his intelligence to make Emenike a little bit less of a threat than when Wilson was on him. Wouldn't mind watching that again TBH.

He's a liability with high balls, no doubt, and he has the odd brain fart too, but there are things Ambrose does defensively that are extraordinary IMO.

So yeah, not sure. Ambrose definitely the better ball player and has more of a place in my heart, though.

I honestly believe Lenny went into that summer resigned to losing Vic, but expecting to keep Hooper and never suspecting Wilson might leave. Must have been a massive blow to his CL plans.

Tight, if I had to pick i'd play Wilson beside Van Dijk even though im a big fan of Efe and he's one of our best players to watch.

Wilson read the game great, he was immense at slide tackling and nobody ever seemed to get past him and if they did he was also fast. Efe is a more skillful player, better passer of the ball and at coming forward. Wilson was a bit stronger and neither of them are good in the air although Efe is great at winning the ball in the air, he doesnt time the jump too well and heads it straight all the time, Wilson never really won much in the air, dont even think he went up at corners so if anything id give Efe the nod in the air. Overall Wilson though, him and Van Dijk would have been solid. Where as Efe is always prone to being caught out by coming forward or outmuscled by a big striker - a big striker may do Wilson in the air but he was faster than most and as I said above tackling was superb.
