I don't think Johnston as been poor in any of the games. He looks solid defensively, runs all day, is strong, and is steady in possession. Probably been a solid 6 or 7 out of 10 in every appearance.

But so far he isn't as intricate with the ball as Juranovic was and lacks the attacking threat of Ralston. But he's very early into his career here so I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt to see if he progresses in an attacking sense. Taylor managed it eventually..

I'd kinda agree with this. I think he and Ralston are on a par, and hopefully they'll constantly push each other. But given that both have years on JJ to develop their experience and complexity, I'm happy we're in a good place at wing back on that side...

Fine defensively, good link up play, doesn't get bullied but not offering enough attacking wise right now.
Boy is just in the door, so deserves time.

    Kyogo. A phenomenon
Literally I said “defends well”. First sentence.

system or not, what I’ve seen going forward isn’t as instinctive as I’d hoped.

A “whipping boy” ffs. Calm down.

Let’s just pretend everyone is pure class then. If people think Johnston has been underwhelming so far they’re entitled to say it. Doesn’t mean he’s a “whipping boy”

You’re assuming I’m not giving him time though aren’t you?

Im just saying based on early performances there’s not much to get excited about. Therefore as I said in my original post, we need to see big improvements. If he’s been “superb” so far then * help us

The signs so far are positive overall, but like any new signing he needs more time.

Just needs to be better in the final 3rd as he almost always takes the safe option of recycling the play.

A few training sessions with Ralstonio will do him the world of good.

    Quite happy with him defensively.

As has already been said on here, needs to find his rhythm in an attacking sense. It's an important job in our system, the inverted full back role. It's even more important in attack. He needs to be better.

I have no doubts he will be better. What I've seen from him defensively is very good. He just needs to be a bit more adventurous going forward.

I think he looks like a more physically developed and quicker Greg Taylor type player. He doesn’t like trying to go past players but has a decent eye for a pass, the one he put Kyogo in with at the end of the first half was a cracking through ball.

My one complaint would be there are times where he should throw the ball into the box first or second touch and he refuses to then it goes backwards.

My hope is much like Taylor has this season is as he gets comfortable in the system Johnston starts being more expansive with his passing.

Will see how he is looking come the end of the season.

Alan Morrison had some interesting things to say about him on the pod today. Said defensively his stats show up like a centre half in terms of duels won and forced turnovers, and his "packing" stats - which measure pass success, taking passes in, and how progressive they are - are some of the best on the team. He said this combination is quite rare.

I really think he's a player who we'll be absolutely raving about this time next year.

A full back's job is to defend first and foremost. And Johnson is solid defensively.
And we saw he has a good attacking side too playing for Canada in the World Cup.
He is still tweaking his game here and making adjustments.
He was brilliant against the Huns at Ibrox. They got absolutely no joy down his side.

Don’t think that’s been a fullbacks first and foremost job for a long time in football now, it’s why guys like Maldini as the ultimate defensive LB is no longer a thing.

It’s a big part of it but it’s not the first thing they’re judged by anymore.

Well said, several people on here merely saying that there is one aspect of his game that he could improve on. Drama queen or what

Prefer him to Juranonic who was over-rated. Armstrong is an upgrade, excellent signing.
