Its non-negotiable that he has to improve defensively. If we are looking to move up a level and become a decent force in Europe you simply cant go into Champions League games with a defender who cant defend. You not only run the risk of getting well beaten but there is also a high chance of being totally embarrassed.

Are there many better sights in football than young Alexandro Bernabei, the first Argentine to play for Celtic, lashing a rocket into the top corner in the 95th minute, before celebrating with the away end. Mad man.

Celtic's Alexandro Bernabei caught up in bizarre Falkland Islands row after scoring first goal for club
Celtic’s Alexandro Bernabei has found himself caught in the middle of a bizarre row over the Falkland Islands after scoring his first goal for the club.

The Argentine left-back put the seal on a 2-0 win over Ross County in Dingwall on Sunday with a stunning long-range effort in the fifth minute of injury-time after he had been introduced as a second-half substitute for the injured Greg Taylor.

It was the 22-year-old's first strike since his £3.75million move from Lanus last summer which, added to Jota's first-half opener from the penalty spot, ensured Celtic remained nine points clear of Rangers at the top of the cinch Premiership going into this weekend’s Old Firm derby at Parkhead.

Bernabei’s goal sparked a reaction back in his homeland from government minister Guillermo Carmona, the secretary of Malvinas Affairs in the Argentine Foreign Ministry, who took to social media to praise the effort and the reaction of the Celtic fans.

He tweeted: "What an emotion I feel to hear 'Argentina, Argentina' in Scotlandchanted by fans. Our compatriot Alexandro Bernabei, a Celtic player, made it possible with a magnificent goal. And what else to say it on an occasion like this except the Falkland Islands are Argentine."

The reference to the Falklands - which was the centre of a short conflict between the UK and Argentina in 1982 - amid recent renewed tensions over the island’s sovereignty, sparked a furious response from British diplomat Mark Kent, who was the UK ambassador to Argentina from July 2016 to June 2021.

He replied: "Don't mix sport with politics. In the UK and in Scotland we love the Argentine players and we show our appreciation. We honour Falklands veterans on both sides. You are a shameless populist politician."

But that prompted the Argentine official to hit back, with Carmona responding: "When your country respects international law, sits at the negotiating table to comply with UN resolutions and ends the shame of colonialism, I may even consider your sports advice. If you think that I am a 'populist politician' for linking football with the Malvinas, know this - the absolute majority of Argentines do that.

I'd rather he shot wide or ever straight at the keeper for an easy save than... that :56: still can't believe it.

Bizarre decision making. Especially after the goal last week. Had at least 4 points where I thought he'd shoot.

Being kind it was his run that made the opportunity but * knows what he was thinking when he squared it.

Really bizarre moment, especially with the belter he just scored you'd think he woudl have the confidence to try it himself, even if he put it wide or it was saved, shooting was the only option.

One of the weirdest things I've seen in a game against the huns before. What the * was he thinking? :giggle1:

Played well apart from that though.

    * was he thinking?

I’m still not convinced by him but that was bizarre.

He literally shat the bed. Embarrassing.

In the post match celebrations you can tell he still couldn't believe he didn't shoot.

It all comes down to a lack of confidence and experience.

I still remember with horror a certain Sean Maloney on his Derby debut at Parkhead, clean through on goal one
on one with Klos I think, and he could have hit it to either side of him, lobbed him, dribbled round him,
nutmegged him, feigned him, and he ends up clattering it against Klos's legs.

I could be wrong, but to me it wasn't a pass at all... I thought he tried to cut back to lose the defender and open the angle for a shot across goal but * it up entirely, in every way, so badly it looked like a pass...

I'd need to watch it again, without the stress and stone cold sober, but that was my initial thoughts
