We badly need to change the full-back role. Ok, Taylor excels in it - but that’s because he grew up playing CM. To me, it’s become clear that that’s still his best position. Would move him there as a permanent option. Might make a better sub for McGregor than any of the other current lot do.

The inverted thing doesn’t seem best suited to any of our other full-backs. Ralston does well in it, but ultimately his best moments for us have still mostly been when he’s abandoned it and played more like a wing-back.

I understand about packing the midfield so the two more advanced CMs can push up, but I sometimes feel that against certain opposition, it leaves our wingers isolated wide. I’d prefer the more common approach of wing-backs and inside-forwards, as utilised by pretty much every other manager with Ange’s type of philosophy, minus one or two outliers.
Before anyone says Guardiola, he really only uses it on the left side, and even then it’s because he won’t drop Walker from RB and Cancelo’s too good to leave out. It also arguably isn’t even the same role, because Cancelo still tends to stay wider instead of coming really tight in as Taylor does for us. Pep doesn’t have much history with that role in the rest of his career either.
It’s almost always overlapping wing-backs that work best for a possession-based, high-intensity style.

 

All over the shop on Saturday. Got caught in behind twice in the first 3 minutes, and one of they minutes the game was stopped for an injury. Second half he wasn’t much better to be honest. Not really surprising given how little he has played mind you.

 

Then he needs to tell Lawwell jr. and Nicholson to buy him players that will fit, and not leave him in a position where he has to shoehorn a wing-back into a frankly very niche, almost idiosyncratic inverted role.

 

Surely for £4m we should have signed someone more suited to the system them

 

Ideally yes, but as there are so few teams play the way we do finding someone like that is easier said than done.

 

I think we need to remember that £4m isn't a lot these days. Our business has been exceptional and maybe clouded that judgement

 

Saturday game he was poor and the Kilmarnock left back had a far better game with great timed tackles .

 

Maybe not but he's Anges 5th most expensive signing so think many expected better than what we've seen so far.

 

Don't understand why everyone gets so caught up in the price we paid for someone. Andy carrol went to Liverpool for something ridiculous like 70 mill didn't perform... surprisingly cause he was * ... but he was 70 mill so he had to be good ... people undervalue and overvalued players all the time. He may come good he may not but leave the price tag out of it

Good management. No need to overburden him. Back in on Saturday and hopefully put in a good performance.
