Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy is emerging as a summer option for Scottish Premiership leaders Celtic as well as Liverpool and Newcastle United

The 34-year old, who was outstanding for Southampton in their Championship play off semi final first leg draw with West Bromwich Albion on Sunday, is out of contract at the end of this campaign and that has alerted a number of clubs.

The vastly experienced former England international regained his place in Southampton's first team after Gavin Bazunu ruptured his Achilles tendon last month and he has finished the season with a flourish.

Celtic are on the look out for a goalkeeper with Joe Hart retiring at the end of the season. Brendan Rodgers wants a keeper who is good with his feet and has looked at signing McCarthy previously.

Liverpool and Newcastle United are also monitoring developments with McCarthy as they draw up shortlists for back-up keepers.

No thanks. Always baffled me that he played ahead of Forster at times

He’s not coming here to sit on the bench when he could be doing the same at the likes of Liverpool or Newcastle instead.

I’d take him as number 1 initially, but only if we also sign a promising young keeper to be the main backup, and to play cup games, etc. Use McCarthy as a tutor and mentor so the young guy can take over as number 1 after either 1 or 2 seasons max.

If we were gonna do that we could have signed this young goalie two years ago to learn from hart

True. We didn’t though. Missed opportunity. Doesn’t mean it wouldn’t still be a good idea in the here and now with a new older keeper instead of Hart.

Was he ever that good? He'd be a passable stop gap. He should never been ahead of Forster though.

No thanks not even close to what we need to take over from Joe Hart.
