Motherwell are leading the chase to sign Celtic's Adam Montgomery.

The Steelmen are looking to fight off interest from several Premiership rivals and English clubs to land the left-sided defender. 'Well boss Stuart Kettlewell made a left-back a priority after Huddersfield recalled Brodie Spencer. Kettlewell pitched after Celtic recalled Montgomery from his loan spell at Fleetwood Town last week. They allowed Montgomery to go and play under former captain Scott Brown but the English side have changed manager twice since then.

Hoops boss Brendan Rodgers wants to keep a close eye on Montgomery and a move to Fir Park looks set to get the go-ahead. The 21-year-old has previously had loan spells at Aberdeen and St Johnstone in recent seasons. Celtic are looking to put a number of their fringe players out to the Premiership so they can keep close tabs on them. St Mirren have just taken South Korean midfielder Hyeokkyu Kwon on loan from Parkhead for the second half of the season.

 

Never going to make it with us, just cut the lad loose and he may go on to have a decent career.

 

I'd give him one more loan deal to prove it.

Odds are stacked against him though.

 

He’s a better option than Bernabei for the rest of the season. So my hope is we have a LB lined up!!

 

Matthew Anderson might get more of a go in there perhaps had a decent loan spell in Austria

 

Watched him play against Northampton last month. Hopeless at the back but made a few decent runs going forward. That's about it really. If you're not dominating a game in league 1 then you won't make it at Celtic. Quite simple really.

Loan deal with Motherwell to end of season confirmed

Adam Montgomery has joined Motherwell on loan from Celtic until the end of the season.

The 21-year-old, who has played 67 games already, was on loan at Fleetwood Town for the first half of the season.

Despite starting out as a forward, Montgomery found himself in defence and has thrived since. He signed his first professional contract with Celtic in 2019, and went on to make his first team debut with Celtic in May 2021. Going on to make 20 appearances for his parent club, Montgomery has had loan spells with cinch Premiership sides Aberdeen and St Johnstone.

He played 33 games last season with St Johnstone, scoring one goal and assisting on four occasions in the process.

“With the low numbers we currently have available, it’s important we bring the right players to the club who we think can make an impact,” manager Stuart Kettlewell said.

“Adam is still a very young footballer who is in the early part of his career, however, to have amassed 67 first-team games at his age, shows he already has experience and good knowledge of the game.

“I’m delighted we have been able to bring him to the club and look forward to working with him.”

Montgomery will wear the number 22 kit for the remainder of the season.

“I’m chuffed to be here,” Montgomery said.

“I’m excited to get going and show the fans what I can do. It’s been really good meeting all the boys so far and feel it’s a great environment to be playing football.”

Good move for him. With their left back being recalled back to Huddersfield, hopefully plenty of minutes for the lad.

Can't believe he's only 21, honestly thought he was at least a year or two older.

I doubt he'll make it here, but it is essentially a make or break loam for him.

 

Even if he doesn't make it here, I hope the loan goes well so he can at least shape a career.

 

Good move this and nice to see along with Kwon. We need more of these loans to other spl sides for players who are not first team ready but we feel might have a chance down the road.

MOTHERWELL have been rocked by a serious injury to full-back Adam Montgomery - just days after he joined on loan from Celtic.

SunSport understands the 21-year-old has suffered a hamstring injury in training and is set to be sidelined for THREE MONTHS.


The player - who made his sole Well appearance against Alloa in the Cup last weekend - will go for scans to find out the extent of the injury.

But it's a bitter blow to Well boss Stuart Kettlewell whose threadbare squad has been hit by a succession of injuries this season.
