Does it matter at that point ? Really , does it?

FFS they have got cancer and might never see there loved ones again ( and stopping smoking is not as easy as you obviously think it is )

What would you say to them?

I * told you this would happen!!

Jesus Christ !!! , i hope you are never my doctor when i am on my death bed :56:

I actually think it is worse when not taking the docs advice for example to get a hope in getting better or not and leaving your family in a terrible state. If I was told my a doctor I would never see my loved ones again due to cancer but could have a hope if you stop doing things that trigger some cancers ie smoking then you know what I would do.

Of course every suffer should get sympathy, I have never said they shouldn't, this could and does end lives. Good to see you beat this terrible disease. :50:

My mother was originally diagnosed with Breast Cancer many years ago, she had a mastectomy to reduce the chances of it spreading to her lymph glands and then lymph glands removed around the affected area.

Things were going well and it seemed she had been fortunate. However for years after she was having the odd issue, like severe coughing (smokers cough like) and other symptoms. The Doctors believed that some of symptoms were hormonal, unfortunately that wasn`t the case as when sent for scans it showed cancerous cells in her lungs and liver. She had to go through more chemo and other treatments. Despite all this she is still with us today(although her condition is terminal).

My mum has never smoked or rarely drinks and I did find it hard to stomach that people whom she shared a ward with were going outside the hospital to smoke. One women even became verbally aggressive with the doctor when he basically begged her to try giving up *.

I understand it`s a addiction for some people but to not even try is another thing altogether. I`ve seen at first hand the physical battle and effects of the treatment has and yet people still don`t seem to want to help themselves.

This is what I find frustrating and to a certain extent alters my sympathy for those who self-abuse themselves in this way.

I'll put this towards you weefergus,
what would your reaction be to someone who smoked 80 a day and because of this you had to loose a limb such as a leg. I'm sure everyone's would be "oh you shouldn't have smoked so many, look where it has got you".

While we are on the same line of subject and not wanting to open a new thread,
Is there any reason why dementia/Alzheimers begin such as genes?

That would mean hardly anyone should be shown sympathy, too much smoking, boozing, sun, eating etc

I dont actually show people sympathy, I feel sorry for them but I dont say it or anything as if anything was wrong with me I wouldnt want people annoying me.

Mls isnt saying they shouldn't receive any sympathy, quite the opposite in fact so i think his post has been taken the wrong way or maybe it could have been worded better.

My gran died early because of smoking far too much, im not sure the exact medical reasons but there is certainly a correlation between smoking and cancer.

Smoking may not directly cause cancer as many have said it could be in the genes but it certainly contributes and those who do smoke should be thinking a lot harder about the health ramifications. I can definitely see where you are coming from, but its difficult to say whether cancer has been directly caused by smoking, hence generalisations can occur.

just becuase someone smoked doesnt mean they dont deserve sympathy, lots of things cause cancer, cigarettes are the most obvious but not the only one, the idea that they brought it on themselves is false, the cigarettes only increase the chance of getting cancer, there is a very good chance that they probably would have gotten some form of cancer anyway
