AS the anniversary of Celtic’s iconic European Cup victory is now upon us, the club is in the midst of celebrating that unforgettable day in May, 1967. And even with the passage of time, half-a-century no less, Kieran Tierney admits he’s very much in awe while in the company of the Lisbon Lions.

It’s not uncommon to see the legendary John Clark at Celtic’s Lennoxtown training base, with that mischievous glint in his eye, or you may hear the wonderful Bertie Auld recalling the road to the Estadio Nacional on one of his regular trips to Paradise, while right-back, Jim Craig, frequently lights up Celtic TV with his tremendous wit and enchanting stories of the history he helped create.

The humility among the legends of Lisbon makes it easy to forget that you’re in the company of footballing royalty. In an exclusive interview with this week’s Celtic View, Tierney believes, as a young footballer, there are no better mentors to be surrounded by.

He said: “When I met them at first, I was a bit star-struck, as any Celtic fan would be to meet their heroes, and that’s exactly how I was because I knew what they’d achieved. Even talking to them and becoming closer to them has been amazing, but also getting advice from them has been unbelievable. Being so young, it’s only been a positive thing for me as I’ve developed.

“For me, to get to know the heroes of this football club is a dream. I know there are many people out there who would love to do what I’m doing, and speak to the people that I can speak to. You see the Lions around a lot, at the training ground and at Celtic Park, and they are so down to earth that sometimes you can forget what it is that they’ve achieved.

“They are all really normal and all just Glasgow boys who will speak to you about anything,” added the defender. “It’s not always about football either. Quite a lot of the time it’s just about life in general. You can ask them absolutely anything and if you ever have a question, they’re the perfect people to go to.

“They’re just great guys and they all have such different personalities. I think that’s what made them such a special team because they all just clicked together. You can see it when you watch their games back and it gets you all emotional. Watching them as a group and remembering what they achieved for the club is something that will live on forever and ever here at Celtic.”

Jock Stein's team have won every competition they have entered this season, but can this former miner achieve legendary status by leading them to Europe's top prize?

The Celtic board turned to their former club captain two years ago when they were on a run of eight seasons without a trophy. Having had successful spells at Dunfermline and Hibernian, he is only the fourth man to manage Celtic and the Glasgow club's first Protestant in charge.

Stein immediately repaid their faith in him, winning the Scottish Cup just a few months after being appointed and achieving a league and League Cup double in 1965-66. He is going for a clean sweep of trophies this season.

Stein visited Herrera at his Inter training camp four years ago to learn from the Argentine's success. What tricks does the 44-year-old have up his sleeve for the big one today?
