Mowbray in talks with Celtic

Discussion in 'Celtic Chat' started by Nimrod., Jun 3, 2009.

  1. BBC SPORT | Football | My Club | C | Celtic | West Brom deny Mowbray approach

West Brom insist that no approach has been made by Celtic to secure the services of Tony Mowbray. BBC Sport understands Celtic have offered Mowbray the manager's job vacated by Gordon Strachan two weeks ago, with compensation being agreed.
A package of about £1m would secure the deal, but a West Brom spokesman denied the approach

  2. I'll take him.

  3. if this is true?

then ill be disapointed in the board for not going for someone more prestiges!

but if this does happen like a true fan ,i will welcome big mogga and will support him 100%. and if he has us

    playing great football
    brings in good footballers
    has us feared again
    pumps the huns(of course)
and more importanlty? winning trophies on top of a decent european run? then who am i to complain!

  4. i think he will be great for us and he seems to have a good eye for a a pleyer and his teams play attractive football

  5. just heard on the radio there that lawell has phoned to tell mcghee that he wont be pursued, and that mowbary has not been approached and west brom have said this likewise also! and also they are still interveiwing others at this moment in time.

on the radio 2 mins a go!!!

  6. Ditto.

I'm not sure what to think of him if he's appointed. But I'll give him a chance.

  7. I hope this is right, I'm not keen on Mowbray.

I just wonder how much people are getting sucked into how "Celtic-Minded" he is?

I know he'll be always linked emotionally to the Club, and I have tremendous respect for him because of the love he had (has) for his late wife.
He has a huge heart, thats not in question, but I wish his managerial pedigree, and ability to attract players was greater than it is.

  8. I dont think it matters that a manager could attract players. We could have Mourinho as manager but we still couldn't sign Deco who would love to play for him. Our maximum we could spend is probably abour £3m on a player and anyone whod need a big manager to attract them would cost more than that so its not an issue.

  9. West Brom deny any Celtic approach to hold talks with Tony Mowbray

West Brom insist they have still received no approach from Celtic to speak to manager Tony Mowbray about replacing Gordon Strachan.

Reports in Scotland indicate that Celtic were close to announcing Mowbray as their new manager – subject to the two clubs agreeing compensation. But West Brom remain adamant they are yet to be contacted.
A West Brom spokesman said: "I can confirm that we have received no approach from Celtic regarding Tony Mowbray."

  10. So which way is this gonna go then?

  11. I'm sure he'll be pleased with that

  12. * knows mate tbh?

  13. I think he is the best realistic option

  14. He'll be delighted! :56:

  15. more excited and happy ifTRUE that mark mcghee will not be pursued nothing against mark msghee but it really would have shown cheapest option and total lack of ambition

Attracting players is a big part of it.

The Mourihno example is a bad one, because we're unlikely to have him as a manager.
But lets say for the sake of argument that he is, then its fair to say that the number of players who are within our price range who would want to come and play for us would be greater than it would be if Mogga was the gaffer.

  16. if theyve told lennon he will be in a job it makes me think they no who the manager will be and he has agreed to this either that he must be a total yes man

  17. Agreed.

But I think our strategy will continue as at present, and we won't generally be pursuing the sort of established players for whom the status of the manager would be a big consideration. Our policy is mainly based on identifying talent in less-well established players - youth players and fringe players - because in doing that we can take advantage of our one genuine major asset - John Park.

As I was saying on a transfer thread, I think one of the main attractions of Mogga is that he knows JP well, and has a proven working relationship with him. Which is essential, as he is the prime mover in a lot of our transfers.

  18. Mowbray reminds me of Tommy Burns and Tommy was unlucky to be up against one of the best huns team ever yet still lost only one game. Can u imagine Mowbray playing the way Tommy Burns did against this * poor huns team WE'LL * MURDER THEM:icon_mrgreen:

  19. I have always had a feeling it will be none of the top 3 or 4 suspects. I have a suspicion that it will either be a foreigner or a unemployed EPL manager with vast experience. It is simply irrational to look at rookie and yo-yo managers when there are guys with 3 times their experience (and at a higher level) out there. There is still the neanderthal mind set that a Celtic connection is needed. FFS would you think twice about McGhee, Mogga, Keane, Coyle etc if they didnt have that and you were just looking at CVs of the best available or possibly available managers in Europe? They shouldnt even be on our first 20 choices. The board are treating Celtic fans like knuckle dragger who will be all happy because there is a Celtic man in the hotseat. I know there are folk like that but they are the past and should not set the agenda.
