During Barnes' spell in charge of Celtic, he won 0 trophies in his 8 months in charge. While Barnes was unlucky with Larsson and Lambert's horrific injuries, his signing policy of the following was awful:

    8 TRANSFERS = £14MILLION
    GK Dmitri Kharine FREE
    CB Rafael Scheidt £4.8M
    CB Oliver Tebily £1.4M
CM Stan Petrov £2.0M (Despite Barnes playing him at RB...)
    CM Eyal Berkovic £5.8M
    CM Stephane Bonnes FREE
    LM Bobby Petta FREE
    ST Ian Wright FREE

His overall record was the following:

    P29 W19 D2 L8
    (66%) (7%) (27%)

*His record in the SPL was P20 W13(65%) D2(10%) L5(25%)
*His record in the Scottish Cup was P1 W0 D0 L1(100%)
*His record in the CIS Cup was P2 W2(100%) D0 L0
*His record against the huns was P2 W0(0%) D1(50%) L1(50%)
    *His record in Europe was P6 W4(67%) D0(0%) L2(33%)
    *His Celtic Park record was P13 W9(69%) D1(8%) L3(23%)
    *His Away record was P16 W10(62%) D1(7%) L5(31%)

During Mowbray's spell in charge of Celtic, he won 0 trophies in his 9 months in charge. While Mowbray started off well and in some games, most notably away from home in Europe i.e Moscow, we played well but he completely lost it and never won more than 3 SPL matches in a row. Not to mention his key, while not all, signings were awful and financially wreckless:

    13 TRANSFERS = £11.5MILLION
    CB Jos Hooiveld £1.8M
    CB Thomas Rogne £0.3M
    CB Josh Thompson £0.2M
    LB Danny Fox £1.5M
    LB Edson Braafheid LOAN
    CM Ki Sung-Yeung £2.1M
    CM Zheng Zhi FREE
    CM Landry NGuemo LOAN
    LM Paul Slane FREE
    ST Marc-Antoine Fortune £3.8M
    ST Morten Rasmussen £1.8M
    ST Robbie Keane LOAN
    ST Diomansy Kamara LOAN

His overall record was the following:

    P45 W23 D9 L13
    (50%) (20%) (30%)

*His record in the SPL was P30 W17(57%) D6(20%) L7(23%)
*His record in the Scottish Cup was P3 W3(100%) D0 L0
*His record in the CIS Cup was P2 W1(50%) D0 L1(50%)
*His record against the huns was P2 W0(0%) D1(50%) L1(50%)
    *His record in Europe was P10 W2(20%) D3(30%) L5(50%)
    *His Celtic Park record was P20 W10(50%) D5(25%) L5(25%)
    *His Away record was P25 W13(52%) D4(16%) L8(32%)

Tough call but I would say Mowbray was worse because..Barnes was atleast statistically better and won 6 SPL games in a row between August 1999 and October 1999, whereas Mowbray won no more than 3 back to back SPL games. How about you?

Fair enough. Its kind of a hard one for me because I don't really remember Barnes so I think I'm going to abstain.

Voted for mowbray because everytime i hear or see his name i can picture that helpless/out of his depth look on the sideline and it really grinds my gears!!

The board bringing keane onboard in january was a big helping hand but he was destined for doom all along imo

Voted Barnes. Should have done a lot better with the team he had. I think Mowbray might have done something good here in the long term. He brought some good players through at least

Wouldnt mind still having the likes of Kamara..better than Murphy thats for sure. He also bought Ki, which will get us a bit of money just now. He brought us Rogne who is maybe our best defender, and Paul Slane and I was delighted when Mcdonald left.Hoovield who now plays for a premership team so he cant be that bad.

In terms of management..wheres Barnes now?

    Mowbray

    A 50% win rate.

FFS. That must be one of the worst in our history.

Barnes. Spent more money and his only decent buy did not realise his potential until MON arrived. Mowbray's time will at least show a profit in transfer dealings when Ki is sold with the added addition of Rogne.

Barnes. He was dreadful with a good team. Larsson ( not for long ), Lambert, Petrov, Moravcik, Mjallby, McNamara, Stubbs, Viduka etc.

I genuinely thought Tony Mowbray was very unlucky as Celtic manager. We were exceptional to watch in some games under him. 4-4 with Aberdeen. 2-1 defeats at Tannadice, Tynecastle, Ibrox. We were excellent at Ibrox and Tynecastle in particular where we had only 10 men v Hearts. Just stupidity that beat us in most games.

I can always remember the game we won 4-1 against St Johnstone up there. We had about 5 strikers on the park at one point. We were great to watch at times even though we weren't very effective, as the win ratio proves.

Very unlucky and you reckon we were, and I quote your words, "exceptional to watch" in the 4-4 draw against Aberdeen when we blew a 4-2 lead with 20 minutes to go and in the 1-2 defeat against Dundee United when we blew a 1-0 lead with 20 minutes to go ? :56:

Yes, our football was exceptional to watch at times. If you refrain from being selective about my quotes you'll note that I also said it was stupidity that beat us most games. We scored 4 goals at Pittodre. We couldn't have been bad. As said it was stupidity that made us lose goals. For example Edson Braafheid trying to catch the ball in the box for Aberdeen's 3rd. Scott Brown turning his back like a big fairy for the 4th. Mowbray never told his players to do this. He had us playing good football. He didn't instruct individuals to make an * of it. No manager can cope with that.

Mowbray was a clueless spineless failure mate. The team on the park represented his tenure in charge totally and absolutely. Our football was never exceptional under Mowbray, infact bar the 2-0 Dynamo Moscow game, the 3-1 Aberdeen game, the 4-1 St Johnstone game and a home game against Aberdeen that I recall, we never achieved his bullshit philosophy and 4 year plan ethos he tried to implement. The only unlucky people were us, the fans, for having to witness it. :50:

I maintain that in an attacking sense we were very good at times. I certainly enjoyed some of our play in the games I attended. However, I agree we were spineless at the back. The game at Ibrox we lost 2-1 we played well, denied 2 stonewall penalties, missed several chances and their two goals were just two big punts up the park. Tannadice as well was just two corners or something like that as well unless I'm mistaken. So all I'm saying is, some of our football was very good in my opinion. No football manager, not Tony Mowbray, Alex Ferguson or even the great Jock Stein could do anything about individual errors. And in most games we drew/lost under Mowbray that's exactly what cost us. That and * poor refereeing.

I think Mowbray was the better manager, but he also left us with a bigger mess of a team!

Both were terrible atleast John Barnes left us with petrov, lambert etc. while mowbray destroyed a team that was only a striker away from winning 4 in a row.so I would have to say tony was worse

Mogga was cheated rotten with hindsight and was hit badly with key injuries to his better players.
The Aberdeen game at the start of the season had Fortune', Maloney and McGeady on top form, but injuries to Maloney and Fortune' ruined his plans for the season moving forward.
He lost the plot at St Mirren and his after match press conference didn't help either.
The Board also went behind his back and got Keane on loan, which made it impossible for him to play Rassmusson (greatly underrated in my opinion) and his other forwards, when fit, with Kean, who was ALWAYS going to play.
J don't so much blame John Barnes for his tenure, more the board for employing him under a recommendation from King Kenny, base purely on the fact that John Barnes was one * of a football player.
