With the arrival of van Dijk, I'm going to take a guess and say he is going to be first choice CB with Kelvin Wilson. We have also took on loan Steven Mouyokolo and already have Efe, so that's four Centre Backs. That's without even mentioning Mulgrew who was player of the year two years ago playing in that very position.

We know he can fill in at Left Back and Lennon seems to like playing him in a midfield three, which I'm not a fan of.

I'm really struggling to see where he will fit into the team this season. I know he is one of Lennons favourites in the squad and his dead ball delivery is second to none.

So the question is, Where do you see Charlie Muglrew fitting into the team this season?

Maybe three at the back with Matthews and Izzy playing wing backs? Like we used to play under O'Neil...

I see him ideally as a good squad player.

I would play him left midfield. For two reasons. His delivery being one. And the other is that it would allow Izaguirre to push on at any opportunity as Mulgrew would provide cover for him. As i've said for ages, we are at our best when our full backs can get forward and support. Izaguirre is a far better player when he has someone in front of him that will sit in should he go forward. I think one of the reasons he looked so poor at times last year was becuase Samaras provides next to nothing in the way of defending.

I love Mulgrew, his performances since he re-signed for the club have been great but if we are looking to be a progressive club then his place is on the bench, it will hurt to see that as he is a favourite now and a Celtic fan but if we are looking to progress we have to be getting better players in in key positions, Van Dijk has been signed potentially to be that step up, although not immediately and of course it would take more than one signing to take us to a new level but you get what I mean:smiley-laughing002:

I'm still not overly confident in our defence. I've never seen Van Dijk, but the majority of our current defenders have strong attacking attributes - Matthews, Izzy, Mulgrew and Efe are all comfortable in possession and good going forward - but I don't think we have a particularly solid back-line. Kelvin Wilson was probably the best out and out defender last season.

If Wanyama leaves then our defense will look ever more vulnerable.

I think Mulgrew will be played in a variety of positions again like Lennon likes to do with him. He's quite versatile, but definitely not as effective in midfield.

I like Mulgrew. Hard worker. Great to have in the squad as he can fill in a few positions.

He'll play all over the place like he has the last two years.

he could be in the mix for a starting CB. Van Dijk and Kelvin with both have to earn their places. Lennon has also shifted him all over the field (cb, lb, lm, cm) to allow players to rest at one time or another. So while he at times did not have a position on lockdown, he was still playing a ton.

In Europe, Charlie will play left mid to provide extra cover. His set pieces were the difference for us in Europe this year, the statistics show it.

    Yeah, pretty much.

He doesn't have a set position and has filled numerous roles brilliantly over the last 3 seasons.

We've now got a big guy up front to aim Chico's crosses at! I'm glad to see that.

I wouldn't mind seeing him at defensive mid. He's a good tackler. A decent passer. Strong and not too slow. Something like this.

    Foster.
    Matthews/Lustig. Wilson. Van Dijk. Izaguirre

Nowhere if van Dijk is as good as his transfer fee.

We shouldnt be building a system around Mulgrew.
