Where do Celtic Need to Strengthen Ahead of the New Season in August?

Celtic begin the 2024/25 season as the defending league champions and cup winners. Celtic won the double last season under the guidance of Brendan Rodgers and will be aiming to do the same in 2024/25. However, there is still room for improvement and Celtic will be aiming for a better performance in the Champions League. Celtic finished bottom of their Champions’ League group and will be hoping to do well in the revamped competition next season. With that in mind, where do Celtic need to strengthen in the summer ahead of the new season?

    Rodgers Keen to Strengthen

As soon as the 2023/24 season was ending, Rodgers was already talking about the need to strengthen the squad ahead of the following campaign. Speaking towards the end of last season, Rodgers said, “What the players have given me has been absolutely brilliant but our job going into next year is to be stronger. Much stronger. But that’s something that is well under way.”

There are some interesting changes taking place behind the scenes at Celtic Park, with recruitment chief Mark Lawwellone of the people leaving the club. Rodgers has sent out a message to the board with his comments and he wants to add new players to his team and quickly. “There’s definitely certain positions we would want to have finalised sooner rather than later,” he said, before adding, “Ideally, if we can do that it would be great but what’s important for us for this summer is getting the level of quality that I want into the squad. That will be key for the growth of this team.”

    Goalkeeper

One of the key players Rodgers will need to bring in is a goalkeeper following the retirement of Joe Hart. A couple of players have been linked in recent weeks and Celtic fans will be excited to see Caoimhin Kelleher one of the players mentioned in the papers. It has been reported Celtic are willing to offer up to £10 million for the Liverpool keeper but that is unlikely to be enough for the Premier League club to sell. Could you sign Kelleher for your Scottish Premiership fantasy football team next season? Striker

Adam Idah returned to his parent club following the end of the 2023/24 season and Celtic will be in the market for a central striker this summer. One option is to try and make the signing of Idah permanent from Norwich City. The Irish international made 10 appearances for Celtic in the Scottish Premiership and scored 7 goals. If he could replicate that output across a whole season, Idah would be a tremendous signing for Celtic.

    Homegrown Talent

While it is always tempting to look for talent abroad, there is plenty of top-quality players in Scotland that could come in and strengthen the Celtic squad ahead of the new season in August. Central defender Scott McKenna is available on a free transfer, Lennon Miller is only 17 but performed superbly in central midfield for Motherwell last season, and Danny Armstrong, currently of Kilmarnock, would add depth to the wide areas of the team, something which proved a bit of a struggle for Celtic at the beginning of last season.
