A friend of mine associates celtics style of football generally , obviously not always as attacking not matter what the consequences , i tend to Agree , and this would probably explain some of are hugely entertaining games with MoN as the 6-2 one month to losing 5-1 the following old firm. Also the amazing high scoring games in europe and away defeats . Just wondered what others think the actual celtic way is.

Don't buy any of the 'Celtic Way' nonsense, that was supposedly Mowbray's approach, that so many endorsed.

I want my club to be successful, not some misconceived ideology of the glory days.

The Celtic Way has been around a lot longer than Mowbray.

It is harder to implement these days, especially in Europe, in fact it used to hamper us in Europe in the 80s and 90s.

Expansive, attacking football full of flair players is The Celtic Way.

Tommy Burns knew what The Celtic Way was all about, his time as Celtic manager is still the most entertained I have been without actually winning the title.

Fair enough in the SPL, but in big European games can we play "The Celtic Way" and not resort to fullbacks booting the ball up to the forwards?

Well, this "nonsense" of playing "the Celtic way" started WAY before Tony Mowbray became manager and was actually started by our very first manager, Willie Maley, 115 years ago.

He wanted a system where the club would find young players fresh from junior football instead of buying the older pro's and he wanted to get the team playing good, attractive, attacking football that people would come to enjoy watching. He incorporated a scouting system within the club to recruit new, young players to the club and it was the biggest and best in Scotland.

Maley setting this up and getting the team to play the kind of football that would be enjoyable to watch had come to be known as "playing the Celtic way", and it's been with us since. Not all managers has been successful as we know (especially through the 90's) but it's been ingrained in the club since the days of Maley, that whoever the manager of the team is, they do their best to "play the Celtic way".

It is the opposite of "the Rangers way" which is foul, dive, cheat and play act. Do anything to win, while playing defensive Football.

When we talk of old Celtic players we talk of the front 4 of the 9-in a row, the front 5 of Bennett, McMenemy, Quinn, Somers and Hamilton of the 6 in a row. Jimmy McGrory and Patsy Gallagher, Charlie Tully etc

You will notice again at the huns, they laud the "Iron Curtain defence" of McCall, *, Woodburn, Young and Shaw. - yes a * 5 man defence that played for years :56: the great partnership of Shearer and Caldow... two centre-halves and their greatest ever player big defender John Greig :smiley-laughing002:

    Celtic's best player - Jinky

    Says it all really :smiley-laughing002:

I agree with most of your post mate, but to be pedantic, Shearer and Caldow were right back and left back respectively.

    Greig was a cart horse!

PS...you missed out their adoration of Tam "Jaws" Forsyth......Scotland's Beckenbaur!!!!

The irony of Tony Mowbray's reign was that under him, we played the worst brand of football I've seen from Celtic in my lifetime. John Barnes' side even played much better football. Couldn't string 3 passes together under Mowbray, was horrible to watch.

Whether we like it or not, I don't think fans of teams outside Scotland (or maybe the whole UK/Ireland) see us as a good footballing side. Everybody else sees us a strong physical side with passion and determination, but not as great technical footballers.

The Glasgow Celtic Way is definitely older than Mowbray.

"and most of the football greats have passed through parkhead's gates all to play football The Glasgow Celtic Way"

An oldtimer told me once that the "celtic way" wasn't so much about the way that you WON football games. It was more about how you played the game in all circumstances - win, lose, or draw, and the way the team played even when they weren't playing particularly well on a certain day.

Never say die is probably a good way to put it but I think it is more than that. Its definitely a mentality even more than it is a playing style.
