What would the harm be in trying him up front for a league game?

Ambrose and Mulgrew at centre half and big Dijk up front. We know he has a fierce shot on him and he scored two headers at the weekend there.

I honestly think that big Virgil might become a decent striker if he gets some game time up front.:icon_mrgreen: But he's playing so well at the back that I really don't want to risk moving him.

I honetsly can't believe I'm seeing posts about him playing up front.

We have been crying out for a centre half like him for years, now that we have our desired centre half, people want to try him up top :smiley-laughing002:

If you are reading this Neil, keep playing him at centre half please.

What is the fascination with finding new positions for our players? :56:

He's a quality centre half and we need him where he is.

    Experimentation.

We're going to win the league anyway, Sutton could play in several different positions when he was here. I don't see what bad could come of trying it for one game to see how he does.

Van Dijk is a CB and CB is where he'll stay however I think he has the ability to play as a striker tbh :smiley-laughing002:

Sutton plugged a gap when it was required. If we are short one game, he might get tried elsewhere. But when we have fit players who can play in their natural positions, why would we try Van Dijk, our best centre half by some distance, in another position. It just makes no sense whatsoever.

I thought I was maybe diving in at first to be fair. But yes, people are indeed wanting our best centre half, and the best we have had for quite some time, to be tried out as a striker :smiley-laughing002:

For those who are in love.....
I think he would be great in a deep lying midfield role and bursting forward like he does in the yaya toure kinda mould..
I said it at the very beginning but he's so good at the back, the best centre back we've had in years so I wouldn't move him now!

He is the best CB we have had in years, why are people wanting to move him to different positions? Madness.

    * me gently.

No one is saying put him up front permanently. Maybe for one game at home against a * SPFL side just to see how he does. We all know he is a centre half, but we are also lacking in goals this season and it just so happens that he had the most shots on goal out of everybody in our team on Saturday there.

The big man clearly has goals in him and he has himself admitted that he is working on scoring more goals. Lennon also said in his post match interview that they've been working on it in training.

That's obvious at every game. Watch him before kick off training and you'll notice he actually trains with Stokes, Commons and Balde and other attackers at shooting. This is while Ambrose, Izzy and Lustig do different training.

I'm far to scared to want him moved about, if only we had 10 more of him...

I think it's tricky to do. But he can steal into the box from time to time and still play center half. You just need a back four who can operate as a back 3, so one of the back four goes in and a midfielder drops back to cover.

It's a silly suggestion, we are forging a partnership between Ambrose and Van Dijk - thank * considering the last decade of patchwork defences.

    Agreed Hammer.

What I am quite happy with is to give both Ambrose and Van Dijk leeway to go forward, if Charlie Mulgrew is in midfield and can plug the gap that is left behind them. It can be a very effective weapon.
