This old chest nut. I know it's been discussed before but hasn't been for a couple of years so I thought I'd throw it out again. How would you class the term?

I know how this is going to go but thought I'd ask as as I have a...lets say Orc on my back saying Hun is sectarian on Twitter.

    Twitter

    My usual reply is this:

    Hun definition:

    1. A member of a nomadic pastoralist people who invaded Europe in the fourth and fifth centuries a.d. and were defeated in 455.
    2. often hun A barbarous or destructive person

So what is everyone's opinion? I reckon I know but just state it anyway. :icon_mrgreen:

CelticWiki has a good definition and history of the term.

If I were to post what I thought was an appropriate term for them, I would probably be banned from this site.

The Walt Disney version of it would be: Odourous, unattractive, monobrowed colour similar to peach who do not know who their father is.

    Hun is not sectarian.

Rangers’ fans have acquired this pet name because of their Hun-like behaviour. As such, we are not the only supporters who refer to them in this way.

Supporters of Hearts, Hibs, Kilmarnock, Aberdeen etc. do the same.

Doesnt matter where it came from its not sectarian because its not about their religion.

They could be a Muslim Hun, a Catholic Hun whatever, if they have to misfortune to support the rankers... then they are a hun.

I've actually heard Rangers fan use Hun on us. So it doesn't really make sense for them to call it sectarian.

There actually used to be a youtube collection and it was stuff like 'Numan thunderbolt against the huns' 'Lovenkrands last minute winner against huns' etc..

they are clutching at straws, the fans of every other club in this country refer to them as huns. same as calling us tims, or timothy as they like to say in the daily record forums. a tim is a celtic fan of any creed race or colour, and therefore a hun is a Rangers fan of any creed race or colour. If they insist that it is a slight against a Protestant from whichever one of the many schisms, then arent they saying that there are no other supporters of their club other than the WASPS? not exactly an advert for a welcoming all encompassing club then is it?

they are huns, even if they are one legged spanish lesbian nuns!

This guy on Twitter is an idiot. I asked him how it's sectarian and this was his reply.

'go home ya Huns to hearts, Kilmarnock, Dundee... The list us endless. Sectarian scum.'

^^^ That's another thing why do other * who are unfortunate enough to support other teams persist in calling us Scottish tic supporters *. I'm not condoning them calling our Irish followers * either.

theres loads of * going about

some people actually claimed celtic were the first set of fans to be called huns. I've no idea. But I know the way it is now. I think it is because of the behaviour, the huns were savage people.

others say it is from protestantism- and that the word derives from the word hanover. No idea there.

No matter what, they deserve to be called huns for the initial reason

Once heard an argument that, because it's 'used in sectarian' framework, makes it sectarian.

Utter bollocks and clutching at straws. It's a term that has no religious, ethnic or racial connotations. So I'll happily say, * the huns.

I actually finally did what I should have done this morning and blocked the hun. My IQ was going down trying to discuss with him how it wasn't sectarian why he was calling me a sectarian scumbag and a * at the same time.

Offensive Slang Used as a disparaging term for a German, especially a German soldier in World War I.
Often hun A barbarous or destructive person.
The racist term for whites also comes from a word that struck fear in the hearts of whites during the ancint times. That word is "Hun." The Huns were Mongol barbarians from Mongolia who tried to invade China and finally succeeded. THye invaded Eurasia from Russia all the way to Germany and mixed in with the Caucasians. Hence, the British began calling Germans the term "Hun."
Offensive terms for a person of German descent.

The term hun is not sectarian, it comes from a time after the war when Celtic and Rangers supporters called each other it as an insult its just that it stuck with Rangers supporters and didn't with us.
