Do you know what the song is about or is it a football song to you?

It is based during the famine and is about a man being transported to botany bay. I would have thought that was obvious

It’s political and has nothing at all to do with football. I’d rather we didn’t sing it at all. It makes us look like bigots.

It is obvious if you know. I would wager that alot would think that Irelands flag is green white and gold.

    * away off. The song is a ballad that has been politicised, it is not a political song. I think you may be forgetting how our club was founded and if singing a song that tells the story of the archaic laws that sent so many young men and women to the other side of the world makes me look like a bigot then so be it.

I wish to * people would stop being so politically correct and pandering to the masses. We have an identity, deal with it

Bigotry is a motivation against a people. I see no motivation of this type in this song.

"Against the famine and the Crown, I rebelled"

This is a sectarian rebel song that has no place in modern Scotland.

Down with this sort of thing.

It's a great song. I think someone will have to look the meaning of 'bigotry' up in the dictionary, if serious.

If you're being serious, you are properly embarrassing yourself with this moronic post.

Celtic was formed as an indirect result of the famine. It's good that we recognise that. I actually wish we'd sing it more often.

I don't want to put words in Rude Bhoys mouth, but I don't think he's being serious. However, I do think he is trying to make a very serious point. Unquestionably 'The Fields of Athenry' has political connotations.

I think Rude Bhoy is highlighting the very clear hypocritical double standards that many supporters/media/Scottish society buys into. I have heard the argument (on this forum in fact!) that politics has no place in football, and yet I would imagine the vast majority of people would be up in arms if a ballad like 'The Fields of Athenry' was banned from football grounds. In a world were clubs like St Mirren can advertise political parties such as the SNP, where Barcelona are congratulated for their 'more than a club' philosophy and their displays showing clear support for Catalan independence before a game against Real Madrid, and where clubs supporters like St Pauli and Athletic Bilbao are celebrated for their own unique ways. The idea that Celtic supporters should stop singing political songs like the 'Fields of Athenry' and the 'Boys of the Old Brigade' etc on the grounds that politics has no place in football or that the songs are some how sectarian is quite frankly ridiculous.

I could be wrong but I think Rude Bhoy is focusing on the clear double standards that many possess, including a number of Celtic supporters on this forum.

The fields of athenry is a nursery rhyme compared to some stuff that's been sung in the past? Surely your not serious. Only in Scotland.
