You have a gripe with him because he is wealthy and he had enough of the IRA "connection" at our club, which many did at that time. You can have an opinion about that, and still remain a humble and respectful person.

When he came in that was part of the deal. It was his way, or he wasn't going to involve himself, or his money.

You'll see that a lot with major investors who actually know actually how to run a company. Its part of the business world.

Exactly. Whatever you think of him, humble and softspoken are not words that would ever be attributed to him.

Funny that the Chelsea supporting, Israeli sympathising, pro gun nut, warmongering, pro British, anti immigration Celtic supporter would have no idea about the personality of one of our most important figures in our history.

He felt it was time for our supporters to move on from that. The vast majority of people in Britain see them as criminals and terrorists. That puts Celtic in a bad light. Its just a fact.

Thought he was deid when I saw this.

I like Fergus, or rather what he done for the club. Think he deserves all the credit he gets for saving our club. He put his money in and that's why we're here today.

There was no guarantee when he stuck his cash in that he would be rewarded at the end so I don't like the criticism he gets because he made money on us. It was a big * gamble he took and in the end he deserved his cash.

Which is something I don't understand. Why do people demonise people like him who work hard to achieve something and come away with a reward from it? After all, Celtic benefited in a huge way for what he did.

I'm getting sucked in by this * * again.

He crashes about this forum trying his hardest to troll the * out of people and generally I just laugh at him.

Yet I'm now letting him push my buttons on this thread.

    Well done Jorge, well done.

I personally think he sounds like a bit of a tadger but that might be just me. Treatment of fans, treatment of Tommy, appointment of Brown, penny pinching. It all adds up.

Folk talk about him saving us - fair enough, totally agree and laud him for that. However the ever demonised Dermot Desmond had written a few years back that he had been in discussion with the bunnet early on in the whole saga. Plans were put in place for him to buy shares and eventually become the largest shareholder - so the 'risk' wasn't necessarily that risky. DD was going to plough tens of millions in to buy shares, so the bunnet always knew he was safe.

This also make me think he was steering the club in a prudent manner in order to make sure our shares were mint condition for him to sell and leave. A bit like what folk seem to think DD and PL are doing now. This despite our shares are worth about a quarter of what they were back then, maybe less.

Fergus then walks away with £40m - a sum that probably quadrupled his net worth, allowing him to maximise profits on the sale of shares. I mean was £20m not sufficient enough. £30m? A sum of £20m would have went a long way to helping Celtic still, the stadium would have benefited with an extra sum of money to make it look alot better. Instead of share issues to fund player acquisitions at that time, thus lowering the value of the shares for everyone else (except the bunnet who got out early) we could have used some extra money for transfers.

As folk have mentioned too, others had invested sums without a return, nor wanting a return. Dermot is demonised on here relentlessly and yet from day one he has invested large sums in us for no return - nor has he said he wishes any return. He has easily invested more than £20m in us.

I'll hang off for now on the canonization of the bunnet. History has been kind to him, he extended a gentle hand of kindness to Celtic but lets not over state the position.

Mc Cann was quite simply a " Money Man " that knew enough about Celtic and the club's history to know there was money to be made. Once in his position he was quick to distance himself from Brian Dempsey, who apparently fed him the information on rival bids for a takeover.

Yes he did what he said he would do in his five year plan and walked away with a substantial reward for his efforts. In my eyes it would be wrong to hold him in the same esteem as Stein, Johnstone & Mc Neill.

    Don't always agree with you.

Agree with all of this post though.

Surely no one can disagree with the highlighted bit.

He did what no one else would...put 9 million into the club to save us.
At the time like others i didn't like him much but over time i understand him and what went on more and am grateful for everything he did.
Would be fitting for him to have a stand named after him.

It was £6m and he never put anything in. He put up £6m as security but he never did pay £6m. It was the share issues i.e. the fans who put all the money and who funded everything.

He walked away with £40m INCLUDING that £6m he put forward as guarantor.
