So I am catching up on games from last weekend yesterday and I watch Furth v Bayern Munich. Furth playing their first ever Bundesliga game since winning the second tier last season. Well what do I see but a team wearing green and white hoops and a big shamrock as their logo. Naturally that got my attention. Sadly they lost 3-0 to Bayern Munich. But I was wondering does anybody know about this team. Is there a conection to Celtic and or Ireland with those club kits and logo?

All I know is the club was founded in 1996 through a merger of 2 teams in the Furth area. Although really it was a case of a bigger club Furth coming together with a smaller club TSV and so the Furth club is actually 110 years old and did win 3 German titles in the early 20th century.

 

They had a good win against Mainz away from home they won 1-0

 

The three leaved clover is the coat of arms of the city of Furth:



Wikipedia says "Its origin is unclear, but the trefoil probably represents the three powers responsible for Fürth during the Middle Ages as well as being a symbol of the Trinity."

Still a cool team though, their stadium used to be called the Playmobil Stadium :icon_mrgreen:

 

Thanks for that Don. I will certainly be keeping an eye on how they do this season. They got their first 3 points with the win at Mainz this weekend. Bit of a lucky sliced shot looping over the keeper late on to win it but they won't be caring about that.

Would be good to develop a list of other European teams that play in the hoops or who have a shamrock in their badge - the reasons for doing so are often surprisingly interesting.

The most obvious example is Panathanaikos, but there's Fürth and plenty of others.

Anyone think of any?

 

Panathinaikos, Sporting Clube de Portugal, Greuther Fürth, Shamrock Rovers, Santos Laguna, Bursaspor, Racing de Santander... don't know if any are connected to Celtic though.

 

I was hoping we could wouldn't include Irish teams as a lot of them are influenced by or connected to Celtic in one way or another - Donegal Celtic in Belfast for example.

The ever-reliable (!) Wikipedia reports, "In their away match against Rangers, Bursaspor decided not to don their home kit to avoid provoking Rangers' fans, as their kit heavily resembles that of Rangers' rivals, Celtic."

Seems unlikely.
