Considering that is our European bid over for the season and with 6 games full of glaring inadequacies staring the club in the face do you think we will spend any considerable amount of money next month and also do you think it is appropriate to do so?

I personally think, given the fact that we signed 2 strikers (neither of which regular goalscorers) and both are still not yet bedded properly into the team we should take that as a warning and get our business done for next season earlier. Biton is also just getting his opportunity months after signing and despite showing promise cannot be relied upon to take on sides of the calibre of Barcelona when we don't even have a set system he fits into yet.

We NEED a goalscorer in the Winter window for me, going out and buying one next Summer and going through this bedding in process whilst we're actually in the competition we have signed them for doesn't work. If we bring them in now, they get used to playing with us and their team mates and gets goals on the board we will have a much better chance to take the opportunities when they come in Europe. It doesn't even need to be a proven European talent or someone with a pedigree just a guy like Hooper who you can tell by watching them they would score goals at any level given the chance. For that reason I'd be happy taking a punt on young talent in the English lower leagues or someone with a proper goals to games record in Europe, we have already shown there's players there looking for their next step.

Not really a thread to bash the board just a simple, will we spend/should we spend question? Or should it be left until the Summer?

Wait until summer, no players with ambitions would want to join us now...

I totally agree, business has to be done before the summer..

We saw this season how it can easily go wrong if we aren't prepared and have players in and settled in the surroundings and way we play..

It's gonna be hard getting players in in January has it's problems,if the board are serious about improving on hat we have then getting real proven quality in attack had to be the number 1 priority, even if that does mean spending more money than usual..

The last bit is the big debate that will roll..

If people think for one second we will splash a bit of cash in January, you're living on the moon.

No "quality" players would want to join us now with no European football left to play.

Ideally get someone in for the reason's stated.

I'm not sure it would be a lack of ambition for someone to join in January, they know what they are coming to, and a tail end of a season shouldn't put them off what the future holds.

I wouldn't hold my breath however.

theres not always value in the january transfer market. the type of striker we need should be able to hit the ground running in the summer. we have already bought potential in balde, pukki and the icelandic bhoy. time for the (nearly) finished article.

I can see where that opinion comes from and also that players are generally more expensive in Winter. I think it is worth the extra outlay in order to get the player we need and one we can get involved as early as possible.

Do you think we should though?

And if we do will you move to mars.:icon_mrgreen:
I would like to sign one good player rather than the 3/4/5 we have been each window...big squad but who gets to play outside the top 14.
Less projects and more for the first team.

I can't see it really. The January window is always a let down. Unless there is a stand out player that we urgently need, then we will only really sign younger/squad players and clear out a few - out of contract or squad players. The league is all but won and we aren't in Europe. There will be no need to spend big as we have no real upcoming challenges bar the Scottish Cup.

I agree with most of what you said.

I think it IS the time to sign three to four players right now, in rank of importance:

    1) A out-and out goal scorer

    2) A defensive LEADER for us - should probably be a centre half.

    3) A creative midfielder capable of linking up play from our back four with our striker. We're severely missing this in the champions league.

    4) A left back - need not be expensive, could even be a bosman signing. We need more cover for Izzy on the left.

These guys will need time to gel in with this squad. I think if we sign them in the winter transfer window they will have the time to adjust and be ready for the european campaign next season.

I don't see the point spending anything unless it's for a goal scoring forward who can be bedded into the side for 6 months. But I can't see us spending the money that on a player that we need.

And I don't see anyone willing to come to us as well in the window, the league is in the bag our board are not going to back the manager in the January window

Even if we tried to spend money in January, clubs are far more reluctant to let players leave, we'll end up signing our 3rd or 4th choice option.

Another hypothetical factor is whether or not the manager will be there next season. Are the board really going to sanction big spending on players when the manager might leave? There would have to be assurances behind the scenes

More chance the board waiting until we have the cash from selling Van Dijk and co before splashing out .
