Martin O'Neill is battling to convince Aston Villa fans that former Celtic star Stiliyan Petrov is a decent player.

Petrov claimed he left Celtic in the summer to join-up with his former boss in Birmingham because he was bored with Scottish football and because matches in the SPL were too easy.

Now, it seems, the 27-year-old Bulgarian midfielder's performances in the English Premiership have failed to impress and some sceptical Villa fans are becoming concerned that O'Neill has signed a £7million dud.

To be fair to Petrov, he has apparently been struggling with a hamstring injury so far this season, but that wouldn't necessarily account for his woeful play.

O'Neill told the Daily Mirror: "He started brilliantly and then, as I was expecting, he hit a bit of a lull but I think he is coming back. I've got no problem with Stiliyan. I would have expected him to have scored a goal or two but that will come. That will give him a natural boost of confidence but he's not short of that.

"He's doing okay and the sort of form that he showed in the early games, at Watford and West Ham, is the sort of form that he shows generally and that's what I expect of him. I think people have to adapt to the Premiership, but Stiliyan is of such a character that I do expect him to adapt pretty quickly and he will do."

Perhaps Petrov is suffering from the pitiful effort he put in for Celtic during the end of his time here. After a period of what seemed to be no focus on his part, perhaps he is having problems knuckling down and putting in the performances he needs to.

Given the desire for success at Villa Park since Randy Lerner took over the reins from Doug Ellis, unless Petrov shapes up quickly there is every chance his career could crumble. And then perhaps he will regret the things he has said since leaving Scotland.

This is all because Stan hasn't scored yet. When he scorers a few he will be a hero. His assists and winning the penalty last Saturday show his class and he will only get better.

    * him anyway. I dont care if he does well or doesn't. He's not in the Hoops anymore so I dont give a toss. That boy lost my support when he decided to jump ship. Bet he's watching the Champions league draw in a few weeks thinking I wish I was that good to play in the knockout stages.

Don't usually like to see ex-Celts struggle but after saying how he could'nt be arsed trying in some matches, and how he found the SPL boring have absolutely no sympathy for him.
And there was the small matter of him acting like spoilt sour wee * on
    league trophy presntation day.
And are ye listening wee Shaun

Having read his book I would say that Petrov was always a bit of a whinger anyway. I had a feeling that he would turn out to be a bit of a back stabber :37:

He streated us disgracefully and I don't feel particularly sorry for him. Yet fer the good old times, when he was such a great player and actually cared for the club, I really don't want him to fail
