Premier League - City stars get watches worth £5m

    Eurosport - Thu, 16 Jul 10:45:00 2009

Manchester City's players were lavished with gifts worth nearly £5 million when they visited the club's owner in Abu Dhabi.

Big money signings Carlos Tevez, Gareth Barry and Roque Santa Cruz were among the players to meet Sheikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan in Abu Dhabi en route to a pre-season tournament in South Africa.
The Sheikh presented each player with a jewel-encrusted Franck Muller watch worth £168,000 during a reception at his palace on Wednesday.
City spent the night in the five-star Emirates Palace Hotel and will fly to South Africa for games against Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday and Tuesday respectively.
Manager Mark Hughes named a 28-man squad for the tour, including Robinho and Elano who will join up next week following summer international commitments.
Emmanuel Adebayor is expected to sign for City within 48 hours after passing his medical, bringing the squad to 29.
That would mean Sheikh Mansour would have spent £4,872,000 on watches for his players.
The club have reboubled efforts to sign England captain John Terry, despite Chelsea's insistence that the defender is not for sale.
City are reportedly willing to pay a £32m transfer fee for Terry, plus wages in excess of £200,000 a week.
The signings of Adebayor and Terry would take the club's summer transfer spending over £100m, and past the £200m mark since Sheikh Mansour's ADUG consortium bought City for £200m in September 2008.
City will return to Abu Dhabi for a warm-weather training camp this winter, including a friendly against the United Arab Emirates national team.

See I actually like City Danni, but this is ridiculous.

I liked them when they played the role of 'little brother' to United. Not now lol

Why because your jealous of the money they are spending, there trying to make themselves a bigger club and they have to splash the cash to do that.

Why wish failure on a club thats only trying to better it self.

Do u you know thats what will happen? Ur already talking about there downfall. Why dont u just give them a chance to succeed. Some people do go into football because they want a successful club and want to win.

Im already taking about there downfall ,either way i couldnt care less not my team ,but what i am doing is being a realist ,already Man City has spent close to 200 million on players ,thats not including wages ,my view is they still wont finish in the top 6 this season ,then they will go down the road of sacking managers etc ,it has Chelsea wrote all over it ,but they can attract a better quality since there in London, its well known that certain players will not travel north to play ,,asked Newcastle when they tried the same .

Our comparison has to be Rangers ,after all the spending they did in the 90s ,today they are paying for it big-time ,It will be fun for a while then the penny drops ,let them have there fun ,rather them than Celtic.

What they have spent already is small change to the owners. There trying to build the team up and the only way to do that now is spend money to attract players to the club and they can progress from there. Tbh if they were going to be like chelsea they would of sacked hughes already from what wasnt exactly an impressive last season from them. There keeping faith in the manager as they have seen what chopping and changing managers can do to a club.

You cant compare them to rangers starters there in the SPL hardly a money making league now is it.

The problem with having these benefactors injecting so much cash is that there is no solid foundation underneath the club. Look at the mess Rangers are in financially because Murray cant support them any more. Having said that, some of the small clubs would love to have a bundle of cash injected into them. Just imagine where Ayr Utd would be now if they had not been so greedy and allowed David Murray to buy them before he turned to Rangers. I guess it all depends on where the club are coming from - Livi could do with some help and maybe get one of those watches!

I said our comparison are Rangers same league ,monies etc .

Theres already been talk about Hughes leaving ,yes that was a while back but he has been giving the benefit of the doubt for now,but i will say when they dont reach targets * will hit the fan,but the bigger issue is ,allready they are carrying a debt what happens in 2-3 years when they dont win anything and the owner starts getting a bit miffed by it all ,they can sell but who would buy that kind of debt ,,thats the point im saying ,if Roman said to Chelsea ive had 5-6 wonderful years here but im offski [russian lol] Chelsea would fold im sure ,i do see where your coming from but maybe im to cautious but they are dealing with scary amounts of money ,theres got to be a recoup of monies from somewhere but even in one season spending 200 million merchandising ,ticket sales and everything else that goes with it ,probaly wouldnt cover the wages at that club.

I don't particularly like or dislike any English team (apart from Chelsea) it's purely because of the money I want them to fail :50:

Not jealous of the money at all, would never want Celtic to go down that road.

I want them to fail so as it can been seen that money doesn't buy success which is what they are trying to do.

Manchester City can confirm that the story in The Sun newspaper this morning claiming that our players visiting Abu Dhabi had been given expensive watches by Sheikh Mansour is a fabrication.

The club is pursuing the matter legally and will do so in the most robust fashion possible.
Gareth Barry, Roque Santa Cruz, Stephen Ireland, and Carlos Tevez have not met with Sheikh Mansour and have spent their day fulfilling a host of engagements on behalf of new club sponsors Etihad.
The players have this afternoon been helping out at a children’s holiday activity centre where 150 local youngsters got to meet them.

Football is all about money now if u got money and you can buy the best players then ur going to be up there.

i personally would like city to do well they have been in uniteds shadow for too long, think they deserve a bit of success.

Just because that is the current situation doesn't mean you have to like it.

Of course football nowadays is all about the money but every now and again you get a surprise when you see someone move for football reasons and not the money.

I'd rather teams developed their own squads than pay over inflated prices and wages for a bunch of players who are not worth it, in some cases think they are better than the fans that give up so much to go watch them and in some cases are nothing more than arrogant thugs totally motivated by money.

If City invested in developing their squad internally instead of trying to buy every big name player going then I'd have more respect for them but as it is they are trying to buy the league, just like Chelsea - not my idea of how football should work and for that reason I want them fail so that others may be discouraged from going down the same route.

Idealistic on my behalf - totally - but money is ruining football in my honest opinion.
