I'm not trying to defend his performances (which have been getting more and more concerning) and there is no defence for that sending off yesterday, either.

I think calling him a disgrace and saying he should never play for Celtic again is a touch over the top. He still has value in the squad, but perhaps not as a regular, nailed on starter as he has been all season.
This is a guy who has a boatload of experience in European and International football as well as being, by all accounts, a popular member of the squad.

The red card was a disgrace. My 2 year old would have known not to dive in like that being on a yellow.

I do like him as a person and has been a great servant don't get me wrong. But he is an absolute liability and I cannot see him getting any better any soon

Anyone abusing Lustig on social media or in the stands needs to have a word with themselves.

I personally don't blame Lustig at all, he's shown all too often in the last 18 months that he's no longer good enough. Initially it looked like it was only stepping up a level to Europe that his flaws were exposed but it's now happening regularly in domestic football too.

Personally I blame Rodgers for continually picking him despite this.

For the contribution he's made to the club he deserves some respect and to join in with the end of season celebrations. After that he should be thanked and moved on.

The likely hood is that Lustig get's picked over Gamboa due to his ability to play centre half (and his height helps here too), not full back. In our current system, this allows Tierney to bomb on and provide width from the left and Forrest from the right while keeping balance on the park. I can't think of any logical reasoning in Rodgers picking Lustig on current form otherwise.

You have to remember Lustig had to have bone shaved from both hips back in 2014. He was out for a fair while and done very well to come in and cement his spot back in the squad. Now I’m no medical expert but I would say after 3/4 years of loads more games domestic, Euro and international that would surely be part of the problem. His hips and legs have maybe aged much quicker and he is slowing down. The body surely has to change when an operation of that magnitude is performed, especially for an athlete. And I wasn’t aware of Mika’s wife being ill. This also has to be effecting our bhoy. Personally speaking from experience I know how my depression effected my family and household. It doesn’t switch off, it’s 24hrs, 7 days. I really hope they pull through it which is far more important than his playing football. And Brendan will be well aware of any difficulties.

And if we need a RB that isnt Lustig and can play CH and can defend we do have Ralston who fits that criteria.

I wouldn't go that far. Players like Ralston and Armstrong are everything that's wrong with scottish football. Players with all heart but no technique and limited ability.

    Almost certainly is affecting him.

You can see it in the way he is moving. Was just looking at his Instagram there and the guy clearly loves the club and has been a great servant. Made me a wee bit angry at some of the comments regarding him.

He has to be replaced IMO, I've said that, but doesn't deserve some of the * being thrown at him. As a support we sometimes let ourselves down in that regard. He isn't some diddy who's come in and been pish consistently. It's actually quite sad to see his rapid decline as he is hugely experienced and an on form Lustig is a great asset.

As you say with his family life as well he needs a prolonged rest and maybe we see how he is come the summer, to even be used more sparingly.

Celtic manager Rodgers has meanwhile defended his right-back Mikael Lustig, after the 31-year-old was ordered off against Aberdeen on Sunday.

It was the latest set-back for the Swedish internationalist after a poor run of form of late, but Rodgers has no concerns over the player, and is likely to pitch him straight back into action once he has served his suspension.

“It was just unfortunate for him that he got sent off,” he said. “Mika is a great servant for me. He has put himself out there. He has struggled for injuries earlier but since I’ve come in, the game time he has played has been fantastic.

“He was unfortunate on Sunday but it’s another chance for someone else to come in. That’s what happens when you get a red card.”

Rodgers believes that Lustig can rediscover his best form and peak in time for the World Cup, although his own concern is getting him back to his best in the green and white.

“He has to keep going,” he said. “My priority is Celtic, and I need to have as many players available as possible.

“It’s going to be great for the guys going to the World Cup this summer, once they are there. The rest and recovery for that will be built in to that but for now, until the middle of May, it is full steam ahead for the majority of our players.”
