Ok guys, call me an ignorant fool if you like but I've got a question. I've never been to liverpool but i know that the city does have a bit of a sectarian divide, though not on the same scale as Glasgow. Do Liverpool and Everton represent any sides in it? i.e. are liverpool the catholic side, everton the prods? or vice versa?

for some reason I always assumed the that liverpool were the catholics, maybe just cos Everton play in blue....... I see a lot more tricolors at anfield too.

Years ago, Everton were seen as the Catholic team and Liverpool the *. I've seen this question being asked on Liverpool and Everton forums.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Everton_F.C.

if you go to the supporters section it says everton fans are generally accepted as being predominantly catholic but both clubs were founded by methodists

They are both made up of sort of Catholic support. Most of the Liverpool fans aren't actually from Liverpool, loads of support for them here in Ireland which is probably why you see the tri-colours and Everton fans are pretty much all from Liverpool, and I suppose it's quite a Catholic city as far as English cities go.

just to add my two cents, in the 80s i know that there were only two teams in all of scotland and england to fly the irish flag, celtic and everton, ive seen of huns that support liverpool, none that support everton to my knowledge, nonetheless liverpool has a massive irish support as do the rest if the "big 4"

Liverpool were always seen as the Protestant team and Everton the Catholic team. It's only since some of Irelands greatest players donned the Red shirt that they got their now famous Irish fanbase. You wont see too many Irish Protestants supporting Everton, plus Liverpool allegedly once had loose connections with the Orange Order there.
It doesn't matter a * nowadays though, as we enjoy a healthy relationship with LFC and their fans, and long may it continue.
The only team in England who can be rightly regarded as a Catholic/Irish team is Manchester United.

Yes historically speaking Everton was the Working class catholic team and in the past Liverpool had loyalist links.

thanks guys, that's cleared it up..... sort of. I agree it doesn't really matter but I've always wondered what the score was between them. Always had a soft spot for Liverpool myself just cos of the scottish connection in the 80's, I think the two cities have a very similar character too which is maybe why celtic and liverpool fans have developed a strong friendship over the years.

Now for the big question! who started singing you''ll never walk alone first, us or them?
