    Celtic linked with Kilgallon transfer

Tony Mowbray rumoured to be planning swoop for Sheffield United stopper.

    18 October 2009 08:23 AM
130978 [IMG] Celtic have been linked with a bid for Sheffield United defender Matthew Kilgallon when the January transfer window opens. Manager Tony Mowbray has identified the 25-year old as the solution to his defensive problems and is preparing a move to snap up the highly-rated centre-back.
Ex-England under-21 defender Kilgallon is out of contract at the end of the season and is yet to sign a new deal with the Yorkshire club. Newspaper reports claim that Mowbray is set to tempt the player and club with a cash offer in January rather than sign the player on a pre-contact agreement.
Celtic would face competition from a host of English Premier League clubs in the race for Kilgallon’s signature. Bolton, Wigan and Burnley are rumoured to be interested in the player and though he has said his game may be better suited to the English top flight, the temptation of European football and a key role in Mowbray’s new-look Celtic side could tempt the centre-back north of the border.
Sheffield United manager Kevin Blackwell would be reluctant to see Kilgallon leave Bramall Lane but may have to concede defeat in his attempts to keep the defender.
"I have not been offered a new contract at Sheffield, I have not had anything in front of me, so I am not sure what's going to happen," Kilgallon told the Yorkshire Post.
“It's nice to get recognised for doing well and playing good football but I have got to concentrate and keep my head down.
“It is an important time of my career and I want to play as high as I can.”
Celtic’s defence has been criticised in recent weeks and Mowbray has tinkered with his centre-back partnership, having tried different combinations of Steven McManus, Glenn Loovens and Gary Caldwell so far this season. However, all three have made individual errors in recent weeks and Mowbray, a defensive stalwart for Celtic as a player, is keen to bolster his back line as his side mount a title challenge.
Gary Caldwell may be the player to make way if Mowbray gets his wish to recruit a new centre-back. Last season’s Player of the Year is currently at loggerheads with the club over a new contract, demanding parity with the high-earners at Parkhead. Burnley and Nice are reported to be interested in securing the player’s services and a January departure could free up wages for Mowbray to bring in a replacement.

I think you are right mate. Kilgallon and Loovens in the center would be sensational for us.

I have heard that Kilgallon is a hard * as well. Just what we need just now.

Loovens and Kilgallon? Nah, put O'Dea in the mix with him, that would be a hard pairing. Kilgallon could win the headers whereas O'Dea is just a header. Might O'Dea improve playing beside a decent footballer for a change. Do you reckon anyone would take Captain calamity in Jan?

Could be that he's only a first division player because no one took a chance on him!

Look at Jaggers at Everton, well into his twentys before he got given the chance!

Well I say that your probably right in that regard, but I would only point to the impact that Bougherra had for the Huns!

I rated him when he was at Leeds and felt he would have had a positive impact at Reading in the EPL had he went there in 06. But by the looks of things with regards to pricing of the English players, I think that he could go at double his value, if not triple!

This Matt Kilgallon link seems to be growing arms and legs.

He is a very good central defender and I rate him highly.

Would be a great signing, also contract out at the end of the season I think so that is him and O'Connor linked both out of contract. I can see where this is going with us and IMO this has to be the way it goes. There is some good players who will be available on bosman. Mogga knows a good bargain. IE Cech, Koren, Miller and kamara. I have faith in any player he may bring in.
