It's things like non domecile rules, tax can get pretty complicated that way. Would also depend on how long he was away etc.

For example, if you are a UK resident that did some work overseas you are liable for the tax in the UK on that (and potentially the place you parked it that also varies dependant on loads of factors)

Yeah I’m with ye, so basically if he was to avoid it he’d probably have to stay there for a couple of seasons and become a resident of saudi would he? Bit of a messy one

Na because it's an annual thing for tax I think it's something like 180 days so it's the majority of the year, tax purposes and citizenship/ long term arrangements etc are different.

There was something about Henderson deferring his wages because he'd have had to be back in England so much for international duty that he'd become liable for the tax on it in the UK

Just going off what i read the other week about Jordan Henderson, if he came back to the UK he would have a 6/7m tax bill and apparently he didn’t even earn any money :giggle1:

The thing I read said he forfeited wages until about now for tax efficiency, but if he leaves they won't pay him or something and instead will go after him for breach of contract.

That was from one of those * social media sources so curious to know if there's a better sourced explanation.

It would be interesting to know if Jota is in the same situation. Maybe he's refusing to move until he gets a chunk of his pay.

West Ham looking into Jota mentioned on SSN transfer Show

West Ham are one of three Premier League clubs in talks over a deal for former Celtic forward Jota, talkSPORT understands.

The 24-year-old is desperate to leave Al-Ittihad after failing to settle in Saudi Arabia following his £25million transfer last summer.

Jota has two goals in 11 appearances since moving to the Middle East, but was a casualty of Al-Ittihad's big spending as he was left out of their registered Saudi Pro League squad to make way for other foreign stars in their team.

It means he has been restricted to cup competitions since, and he is keen to seal a move elsewhere to reclaim a more regular first-team role - with West Ham willing to give him that opportunity.

The Portuguese ace came through the Benfica academy before joining Celtic in 2021, joining initially on loan before the Scottish giants triggered a £6.5m permanent transfer.

He managed 28 goals and 26 assists in 83 games for the Bhoys, and played a starring role in their treble-winning campaign last season before his exit to Saudi.

This is a good point but I’m sure Saudis would defer some of his wage to a different point in time to avoid it and push the move through they did that with Henderson

I wouldn’t pay attention to transfermarkt but yeah they did from their official accounts they got just over £13m, we got £12m profit.

If there was any sniff of it at all I’d be all over it. When you talk about something that could salvage the situation for us that would be it.

    So it definitely won’t happen.

Said this near the time Henderson coming back to the UK was discussed. If you work in another country that don’t need you to pay tax you are only exempt in the UK if you spend less than a certain number of days in the UK.

That’s why a lot of oil sector workers spend time in Canaries, Ireland or anywhere else when they are off or they would get nailed for tax. Footballers will be no different.
