Joe Calzaghe's super-fight with Bernard Hopkins looks set to go ahead in April, with Las Vegas the likely venue.

Calzaghe's promoter Frank Warren said: "The deal's done and will be confirmed with the venue and date next week."

The undisputed world super-middleweight champion said: "The talks with Hopkins' representatives are almost over, and I've been told it's on 12 April.

"The venue is not set in stone but it does look like the fight will be in Las Vegas," he told the South Wales Argus.

Hopkins, 42, is widely regarded as the best light-heavyweight in the world, and Welshman Calzaghe will step up to 175lb to meet him.

New York had been suggested as a host city, with Yankee Stadium and Madison Square Garden mooted as venues.

But the extra glitz and capacity offered by the super-hotels and casinos of Las Vegas look to have won the day.

Calzaghe said: "Two that I have heard mentioned in discussions are the MGM Grand, which staged Floyd Mayweather v Ricky Hatton, and also the Mandalay Bay resort."

The pair squared up at the MGM Grand hotel in Vegas last month at the weigh-in for Ricky Hatton v Floyd Mayweather, sowing the seeds for another big British-US clash.

Pound-for-pound great Hopkins said he "would never let a white boy beat me" as he tried to taunt 10-year super-middleweight champion Calzaghe, who laughed off his boasts.

He said: "I went to Las Vegas to support my mate Ricky Hatton and when I met Hopkins he got in my face and taunted me, saying he'd 'never lose to a white boy'.

"Can you imagine if I had made comments like that? I don't think I would have won Sports Personality, that is for sure."

Newbridge-born Calzaghe, 35, has long been after a super-fight against former middleweight king Hopkins, and is now ready to fight in the States.

The Welshman has won all of his 44 fights, with 32 knockouts, and in his last outing he beat Mikkel Kessler to add the WBC and WBA titles to his WBO belt.

Hopkins, known as 'The Executioner', has a record of 48 wins, four defeats and one draw, and is one of only seven men (including Calzaghe) to have held world titles for 10 years.

never lose to a white boy? Can you imagine Calazage said he would "never lose to a black guy" there would be a massive uproar about it. I hope hopkins gets challenged for his comments

6 years ago this woulda been fascinating but now I think Calzaghe will be a big favourite. Hopkins is still an elite fighter in the skill department but he can't sustain the activity level anymore, and we all know Calzaghe is one of the busiest fighters in the world in there....Hopkins is a good enough counter puncher to slow the pace down to a level he can manage but I still expect Joe to outwork him.

    Calzaghe UD in a bore.

Totally different, Hatton was out of his depth, Calzaghe is the best Britain has to offer. He'll be all over Hopkins like a sore rash and will destroy him. Typical yank though.

being on here from the US and being a celtic fan has * nothing to do with me suggesting that your a biased boxing fan , you dismissed calzaghe straight out ! get that straight.

we'd be better chatting on a boxing forum before the idiot crew see this and complain that we are being aggressive !!

    lol

yeahh haha, but I just think some of you guys have a lot to learn about boxing, its more then throwing 1000 punches in one fight. Its SKILL,Footwork,Stamina and heart not saying Joe has none of the above but Hopkins is a well seasoned boxer from Philidelphia whos skill is off the charts.I dont know how JC will beat him

JC has been the Super Middleweight Champ for 10 years...........hmmm my question is why didnt he fight any of the boxers I mentioned in my previous post that including Winky Wright?
    .........................anyone?

Hopkins states that his oral agreement has served him well during his career but during contract talks a couple years back he went from wanting 3m to 5m overnight to fight Joe. True that Joe has never fought in the USA but it's funny how now the likes of Hopkins, winky. jones now that their careers are ending and tasted defeat a few times are wanting a piece of Calzaghe.

Stepping up to light-heavy won't be a problem as Joe struggles to make super-middle. If there's a fair ref in Las Vegas that night you'll witness a very comfortable points victory for Calzaghe.:bbpd::47:
