Worth discussing. This was sparked when Metrobhoy said the following:

Instead of derailing the Sammy thread with a discussion about Hooper's prowess, I thought I'd open it up here instead. We know what makes a poor striker (Sammy), but what makes a great one?

Gary's record with us, so far:

    Played: 48 Scored: 27

Anthony Stokes' record for comparison is:

    Played: 46 Scored: 22

Acceptable, of course. Both of our bhoys would probably agree they could score more, though. Taking into account Gary's injuries and Anthony's off-field issues, I feel we'll see a greater rate of productivity from each. Even better than McDonald's 1 in 2 (128/64) rate.

Out of curiosity, though. How many goals in a season would either have to score to be considered truly great?

    Truly great???
Would have to be mid 30's to be great.Certainly over 30.Anything between 25-29 would be very good though.....less than that then you are talking a run of the mill Celtic striker!

I don't think its all down to goals, Scott McDonald proved he could score in europe and averaged a goal every 2 games for Celtic, maybe thats why Metro seen him as being better than Hooper, when you think of great strikers at Celtic you think of Khing Henrik Larsson, we will never see one of him again, so you cant use that as a standard, I think to be seen as a great, you need to do something great, look at the likes of, Hartson and Sutton, they were there with Henrik when the team got to the then Uefa cup final, add that to playing in such a great team and scoring a good amount of goals and helping each other get goals, that makes them greats. Same with Skippy, he was in the Strachan team that got to the last 16 of the Champions League 3 years running, scoring against the likes of ManUtd and AC Milan, that makes him seen as a brilliant striker, I would say he was great but i am a bit biased towards Skippy, he isn't up there with the Hartsons and Suttons though.

So to me, to be seen as a great striker at Celtic Park, you have to be part of a team that done something big, as well as scoring a lot of goals, or being a striker that helped your partner score a lot of goals.

Sutton and McDonald scored about the same amount of goals and played oddly enough about the same number of games, as well. Hartson was a greater goal scorer for us. 88 scored in 146. Still breaking about 1 in 2, though. Stokes and Hooper are hitting a similar level.

So, they're in the same class? Or should we expect more? You can't say they don't contribute in other ways like Harton and Sutton did, either. Maybe Hooper, but Stokes wracks up a whole load of assists.

I'd say about 25-30 goals a season would make a great striker for us. IMO Stokes & Hooper will get you that every season if they started every game (bar injuries & suspentions).

Goals win you games. Winning games gets you 3pts. A lot of 3 pts gets you League Title. League Title gets you Champions League. Champions League gets you money. Money gets you good players. Good players get you goals. Goals win you games etc etc etc.

This is why Hooper & Stokes should play every game!

I know thats got nothing to do with this thread but im just saying.

Perfect sense, simply put! Very well said!

As for the OP, 30 minimum!

If Stokesy & Hoops played every game they would both score that amount!

To be considered great though, you have to do it on the big stage as well, so regularly vs the huns & in Europe!

    Hail Hail

I think that Hooper & Stokes are actually doing a wee bit better. I mean, look at the players Hartson & Sutton had around them & compare them to the players Stooper have around them at the moment. Hartson & Sutton had more quality around them to get them goals. If you know what i mean.

I think Stokes will end up with a better scoring record than Hartson & Sutton in the future (that's if he doesn't * off cos he's not getting in on the big games)

    This.

With Hooper, it's clear to see that he's a hunskelper in the making, he's not quite there yet, but he'll get there.

He's played 6 games against the huns and he's scored in 3 of those games, 4 goals in total. Good record.

In Europe he's played 4 games scored 1 goal (I think). Could be better.

With Stokes, well, we dont know if he's good in the big games cos he doesnt play in them!

1 start against the huns, 0 goals.

1 start in Europe, 0 goals.

I think with Hooper its all about his attitude, sometimes he looks like he be our consistent top striker no problem, and at others he looks like he canny be bothered his *.
Hopefully he gets to the point where its much more the former than the latter, and keep it there.

Hooper will never be a Celtic great, he's not even a great player.

Scott McDonald done it on the biggest stage and for that reason I prefer him over Hooper.

I don't think it depends just on goals. I don't think Big John or Sutty generally scored more than 20-25 goals a season (except 1 season when John scored 30), yet I doubt many on here would deny that they were great strikers. It's because they offered a bit more to the team in terms of link up play and physical presence. I feel Stokes and Hooper at least have the potential to be great strikers also, due to the fantastic understanding they have with each other. It's not a partnership which should be broken up though. Hopefully Lenny now realises this.

Important goals and the grit and attitude to win games i.e not Throwin ur hands about in a huff cos a pass never came the way you wanted.

Hooper aint a great striker yet, if he pulls his finger out his mudhole he could certainly be on his way to achieve that status

A striker playing regularly needs at least 20 to get pass marks for me and should net 25+ a season.

it's not all in the numbers mate. even if hooper scores 50 goals a season for 5 seasons in a row but we don't win a league title, he won't be considered a great striker.

apart from that it is also important which type of goals a striker scores. to really be a great striker one needs to score goals when most needed. dying seconds of important matches and such.

Having seen a good few strikers come and go over the years at Parkhead, I feel an average striker at Celtic should be scoring 25 per season, a good striker 30-35 pers season, and a great striker 35 plus.:celt_2:

In my opinion, a very good striker in Scottish Premier League must score about thirty goals. If you add the European championship and the national cups, I think he will near to fifty goals in a season. It's enormous but it is what a club like Celtic should have :86:
