Just been having a discussion with die hard boy and thought i would make a thread on how many goals a season should our strikers be scoring???

Sammy has 12 goals in 22 starts for Celtic this season - 2 assists

Fortune has 8 goals in 16 starts- 0 assists

And McDonald had 12 goals in 21 starts for us this season before he left. 1 assis

Do you think these stats are good enough?????

I think they are no were near good enough considering the ammount of chances celtic create, even assists should still be higher imo, this just goes to show how bad we have been this season, there were times earlier in the season when our strikers couldnt buy a goal, but we had the exact same problem the year gs left and blew the league for it.

A personally think samaras should be on at least 20 goals this season considering the sitters he,s missed.

Fortune should be on a lot more but has fluffed most of his shots as well

    thoughts?????

all i can say is they should be doing better than they are?

how many? idealy i would love all our strikers to score 20-30 goals a season but as long as the team are making an effort and winning which they arent! then its pointless.

Doesnt matter how many they score, as long as we win the league. Cadete scored a barrowload and we didnt win anything, so it doesnt really matter.

Would like to see the midfielders contributing more though

:50: Spot on. One of the problems in the 2nd half of last season was that, with Sammy & JVOH unable to find the back of the net FOR MONTHS, and F all coming from midfield in terms of goals & it wasn't like they were creating bucketloads either, it was all left to Skippy to carry the goal threat, which then makes it easy for oppositions that played us back then - stop Skippy scoring, stop Celtic scoring.

Fast forward to now. N'Guermo is being used primarily as a defensive MF, Ki still finding his feet, Brown offering little in a creative sense & McGeady out of form, there isn't as much being created as there should be. We finished the game on Sunday with 4 forwards on the park I cannot remember a decent attack throughout, or even winning a single corner kick. With the front men firing blanks, the MF is still contributing * all in terms of goals.

those stats arent good enough, i remember the days of looking at the top scorer list and seeing larson at the top with the likes of sutton and hartson not to far behind.these days its dominated by boyd because he gets about 6 goals a match aginst the wee teams.and the likes of kamara, fortune and samaras are never going to score alot of goals

you can score as many as you want 3-3 falkirk , then Aberdeen 4-4 but if you canae stop conceding the way wee do then Keane Sammy fortune would have to score bout 30 each

but i would say between 60 between 3 would be nice and 25 between 5/6 midfielders would help also

McDonald & Sammy are equal top scorer so far this season... What odds that Skippy finishes no further than 3rd top scorer this season? (ie, that no more than 2 people score 13 or more, including Sammy, who only needs to score 1 more, Fortune would need 5 more, Keane would need 10 more etc). Indeed, what odds, given the fact that Sammy has fallen down the pecking order, that these 2 finish joint top scorer?_

Thats a sad thought, isn't it?

This is one of the reasons why we are in this mess

Sammy for starters should have atleast be sitting on 20 plus with the amount of chances he has had and drifting wide does not help

Fortune should have a few more him self but was out for 2 months

Mc Donald was having a poor run into the bargain but still managed to get
12 not bad for a poor run

all in all goals means points and if we are poor in the area then it comes back to haunt you,

    Just found this interesting article
ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE :: Goals from Non-Strikers = Premier League Success

It basically states that the top clubs in the league rely less on strikers for their goals, have a read.
Even more interestingly the West Brom stats were the exception to the rule under TM

    Another worrying stat I found

Hartson said if you don't score 25 goals for us, you're not doing your job.

My issue is our conversion rate from our strikers- it seems to take each of them them 4 or 5 good attempts before they score.

So in my book decent striker would score 20 goals a season whch works out at 80 to 100 attempts to achieve that.

Is that the average for all the other teams?

I think a goals to starts ratio is the fairest indicator. I don't just count appearances as I don't think its fair to judge a player when the rest of the team has dug a hole and isn't producing and a guy is tossed one with 10 minutes left.

I think over 0.5 goals per start is decent.

Also as to what Hartson said about 'job' it really depends on the role the forward is playing in. for instance, Anelka at Chelsea usually plays a second striker role (unless drogba is hurt, then he moves more to CF) and contributes to the overall team performance without putting in an enormous amount of goals.

But like I said goals-starts for forwards in general should be a ratio of 0.5 or more

A good striker in scotland should be scoring 20 or more a season in scotland.

Would like to see Brown, McGeady and co chiping in with more than they are doing as well.

P.S. We have only scored 18 goals from defenders and midfielders this season.

I think its when you consider the amount of chances they have had. All they stats, any manager, player, fan would be proud of. But when you consider that that w have 20+ chances a game, brings a dampener around it. With that amount of chances they should have at least 2-4 every game. I don't know how many sitters all our strikers have missed , including Keane.
