I thought McCarthy chose Ireland because its who his Grandfather (who died) wanted him to play for? Thats what i heard in the local rag.

naw thats O'Brien's story

 

O'briens was because he never got picked for the U19 Euro Championship squad apprently.

For McCarthy, he had promised his Granda (who was from Donnegal) he'd played for the Republic, and since he died not long ago, hes kinda committed to that promise.
