Leicester Just confirmed the deal
Croatian youth international Filip Benković joins Celtic on a season-long loan
- The 21-year-old joined Leicester City from Dimano Zagreb this summer
- The 6ft 4ins defender made his first Leicester City appearance against Fleetwood on Tuesday night
- Benković could make his Celtic debut in Sunday’s Old Firm Derby against Rangers
The talented 21-year-old joined the Foxes on a five-year deal earlier this month from Dinamo Zagreb and will now continue his development with Celtic as they aim to win a 50th league title.
The Croatian youth international, who made his City debut as a substitute in a 4-0 win over Fleetwood Town on Tuesday night, is regarded as an exciting talent following a string of impressive performances in Croatia.
He arrived at Leicester City after a successful 2017/18 campaign at Dinamo Zagreb in which he made 30 appearances for the Croatian side in all competitions, scoring four goals in a season that saw them clinch the league title.
The 6ft 4ins defender came through the Dinamo Zagreb academy and made his debut in July 2015. He won the league with the team the following season and has featured in three European campaigns – two in the UEFA Champions League.
He joins a Celtic side who sit second in the table after just three games and who are aiming to win their eighth consecutive league title. Benković could make his debut in Sunday’s Old Firm Derby against Rangers at Celtic Park.

FILIP Benkovic has today joined Celtic on a season-long loan from Leicester City. The highly-rated Croatian under-21 internationalist, who joined Leicester in the summer from Dinamo Zagreb, will link up with his fellow countryman, Jozo Simunovic, at Paradise.
And the 21-year-old defender, who was at Celtic Park to watch the Hoops beat FK Suduva to book their place in the group stages of the UEFA Europa League, is looking forward to the season ahead with the Scottish champions.
“I’m very happy to be here,” he told Celtic TV in an exclusive interview. “This all happened so fast but I’m delighted that it finished here as this is a very big club with a big history.
“I was at the game on Thursday night and I can only say that the crowd were unbelievable. They were amazing and lived with the players for the whole game and they were so passionate. I really liked what I saw and I can’t wait to play in front of them.
“I will promise that I will do my best in every game and every training session. I know I can improve in my game as I want to reach as highest level as possible so I will give all my blood to this club. This is all can promise.”
The new Bhoy will recognise one familiar face in the Celtic dressing-room, and he’s looking forward to meeting up with Jozo Simunovic again.
“I know Jozo,” said Benkovic. “He also played at Dinamo Zagreb and he’s a very good guy and player and I’m good friends with him.
“We couldn’t speak as this all happened so quickly in one day but we’ll have time at training today to speak and he’ll tell more about the situation here.
“This club have such a big history and Celtic are only interested in winning and collecting trophies. I am a player who only wants to win and improve every day. Our goal this season is to win every trophy and do well in Europe, which I think we can do.
“I believe the team share these ambitions and with this crowd and this passion then I believe can do big things.”Tommy25 likes this. -
